Celtics By Shira Springer, Globe Staff, 9/11/2003 DURHAM, Conn. When Vin Baker opened the door to his brick mansion late Tuesday night, he looked different than he did six months ago. He was clear-eyed and harder edged. Most noticeably, the puffiness that followed his jawline was gone. He sounded different, too; stronger and surer. ADVERTISEMENT It has been a long journey, and Baker was ready to speak candidly and publicly for the first time about events that led the Celtics to suspend him Feb. 27. "I am an alcoholic," Baker said, detailing a struggle with "binge drinking" that reached such a self-destructive level last season that he went through nearly four months of treatment to change his life. Now, with Celtics training camp three weeks away, he believes he has an opportunity to save his career. In a wide-ranging interview, Baker discussed his treatment, his early denial, the team practices where he admittedly smelled of alcohol, the concerns coach Jim O'Brien voiced in December, the pressures that came with a contract worth approximately $86 million and All-Star honors, the start of his drinking problem following the lockout in 1998-99, the plans for a successful return to NBA life, and the challenge of winning back teammates and fans.

Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Celtics By Shira Springer, Globe Staff, 1/24/2004 The Celtics yesterday suspended Vin Baker indefinitely for noncompliance with his treatment program, likely moving the team one step closer to the termination of the power forward's contract. ADVERTISEMENT A league doctor jointly selected by Baker and the Celtics notified the team of another incident of noncompliance yesterday. The current suspension resulted from a positive test for alcohol. On Jan. 6, Baker was fined and suspended for three games for his failure of multiple alcohol tests. In accordance with an agreement reached by Baker and the Celtics last summer, the third incident of noncompliance results in an automatic suspension for an indefinite period, effective immediately. If the suspension reaches the 10-game mark, which would happen when Boston plays at Chicago Feb. 12 right before the All-Star break, Celtics officials can move to terminate the remainder of Baker's contract, worth approximately $35 million over 2 1/2 years. Coach Jim O'Brien said he would proceed as if Baker will not return for the remainder of the season. "I'm very disappointed that things have not worked out for Vin," said O'Brien. "It's just a tragic turn of events. It's just a difficult disease to deal with and right now it would appear that he's not winning that battle."

Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Vin Baker NEW ORLEANS - Vin Baker's contract could be terminated by the Boston Celtics tomorrow, which would clear the way for the Knicks to possibly sign the troubled power forward. Baker has told at least two NBA players that his goal would be to join the Knicks if he is released by the Celtics. The Knicks have refused to comment on Baker's status. The 6-10 forward is a low-post scoring presence the Knicks covet, but his troubles off the court make him a risky investment. Baker, who is a recovering alcoholic, was suspended indefinitely by the Celtics on Jan. 23 for violating his aftercare program. Baker and the Celtics reached an agreement over the summer that only a doctor overseeing Baker's care, approved by the team and player, can determine if Baker is ready to return. The agreement also said that if Baker wasn't back within 10 games, the Celtics had the right to terminate his contract. Baker is scheduled to make $35 million over the next 2-1/2 years.

Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER The agent for former Celtics power forward Vin Baker said yesterday his client should be signed by the end of the week, and that the Knicks are among Baker's top choices. "The Knicks have a great chance," Aaron Goodwin said before the Knicks lost to the Cavs. "It's a great organization and they have number of people who are sensitive to the issues that Vin has gone through. They are also a playoff team and those are the categories we're looking for." Detroit, Miami and Indiana are also said to be interested in Baker, who was released by the Celtics 10 days ago after being suspended for violating his drug aftercare program. Baker, a recovering alcoholic, had the final 21/2 years of his contract, worth $38 million, voided by the Celtics. Baker has filed an appeal through the Players Association, whose executive director, Billy Hunter, said yesterday that the union likely will give Baker the OK to sign with another team sometime within the next 48 hours. "We just want to make sure it doesn't negatively impact his arbitration," Hunter said. "We hope to resolve that within the next day or so.

"Whether it was here or at our first house a couple miles away, Vin would always be playing basketball," Jean said. "Even on a Saturday morning when maybe you'd be trying to sleep a little later, there he'd be. You could hear that bounce, bounce, bounce of him dribbling that ball. He couldn't wait to play." Especially with Uncle Leroy. Vin, the starting power forward with the Seattle SuperSonics, says he didn't learn the game at some camp or from NBA telecasts. He learned it from Uncle Leroy. "I was little I don't know, 7 or 8 and I'd be out in the driveway bouncing a ball, waiting for him to come home from work," Vin said. "He worked on the production line at Chesebrough-Ponds [in Clinton]. When he'd get home around 4, I'd be right there when he opened up the car door, saying: 'Let's play. Let's play.'

Extractions: InsideHoops on the Recent Failed Trade I claim that the big trade that would have sent Ewing and co. away and brought Vin Baker and Glen Rice in return would have been terrific for the Knicks. Gary Payton says that as well. Therefore, no other opinions are valid. Baker declared last week to be the most traumatic of his life. Allan Houston has declared those who claim the Knicks are better without Ewing to be insane. That's a paraphrase. Of course, statements like Houston's may serve to help keep Ewing's trade value high, and therefore bring back higher returns should he get dealt after all. Not that we're accusing Allan Houston of even thinking that, but with the NBA these days, you never know. I know that if I ran a team and wanted to trade a guy, and it was all out in the open, I'd certainly encourage my players to make positive statements about that player to the media. Wouldn't you? Gary Payton was upset about the deal, for several reasons. For starters, he knew nothing about it. Remember when you heard that the deal was about to be made official? That's when Payton learned about it as well. You'd think management might have thought to speak with the team captain and superstar guard to hear his take on it. Again, hypothetical situation - if you were the General Manager of the Supersonics, wouldn't you ask Payton for his opinion before making a major move? I sure would.
