A three-year starter at Hartford, Baker set school records for most career points (2,238), field goals made (860), free throws made (445) and blocked shots (279). He also ranks second all-time in games played (112) and third in rebounding (951) for Hartford. As a senior in 1992-93 he was named the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I Player of the Year after ranking fourth in the country in scoring (28.3 ppg.) and 18th in rebounding (10.7 rpg.). Baker has experienced success on the international court as well. Most recently as a member of the 1999 USA Pre-Olympic Qualifying Team, which finished 10-0 and won the gold medal in Puerto Rico, Baker averaged 7.8 ppg. and 4.0 rpg. As a 19-year-old collegian, he earned a place on the 1991 USA Basketball Junior World Championship Team that rolled to an impressive 8-0 record and captured the gold medal in Edmonton, Canada. Extractions: Big Vin is the softest power forward in any professional basketball league, including the WNBA. The Sonics have are a significantly tougher team since the yielding and weak Baker headed East. Not to say that basketball is hockey or football but toughness matters on the hardwood. Defense, rebounding, and scoring in traffic are all about determination and strength. Just ask any Knicks fan what happens when your starting power forward lacks resolve and will - you end up watching him miss 15 lay-ups in a row in a deciding playoff game. The unquestioned leader of the Sonics is Gary Payton, who is one of the hardest workers in the league. Payton is a true never-say-die type that always puts in a full days work on the court. The younger Sonics, Des Mason and Rashard Lewis, seem to be cut from the same cloth. Baker clearly was not. Vin could bust his ass one game, coming up with important boards and buckets, and then follow that up by doing absolutely zilch the next. An opposing scout said this about Baker in Sports Illustrated's NBA Preview Issue: "His problem is that he thinks he's working hard when he's not." In the Western Conference, that sort of approach by your starting center/power forward translates to a lot of losses. That won't be a problem for the Sonics this season, as the lethargic, but talented, Baker has been replaced by a troika of less talented but harder working big men.

FORUM Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Forward Vin Baker cleared waivers on Wednesday and the Boston Celtics proceeded to terminate his contract. Baker is now a free agent. Last Friday, the Celtics requested waivers on the troubled star after he missed Thursday's game against the Chicago Bulls. It marked his 10th consecutive absence due to suspension, opening the door for the club to end his contract. Baker, suspended indefinitely on January 23 for failing to comply with his aftercare program stemming from alcohol abuse, had $35 million and 2 1/2 years remaining on his deal. His contract with the Celtics stipulated that if he did not return within 10 games, the team had the right to end the deal. Baker was suspended for three games earlier in the season for failing to go to his treatments. He left the team last season to address personal issues, which included the alcohol-related problems. Baker averaged 11.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in 37 games this year for Boston.

Extractions: Q: What has your experience representing the U.S. been like so far? Baker: The experience has been great, coming out and playing for our country. Qualifying for the Olympics last summer was a great experience, one of my best, if not the best experience I've had playing basketball and connecting with players. That has been the best experience, hanging out with the guys on and off the court. Q: What does it mean to you to get this opportunity? Baker: It means the world to me to have the opportunity to compete for my country. It's different when you're competing for a city, for a title, but to have the opportunity to bring all those cities together, all those teams together on one team and compete for one common goal, which is the gold medal - I don't think there's any better feeling with the exception of winning a world championship. Q: When you began your NBA career did you ever think you would be playing on an Olympic team? Baker : No, I never expected to be an Olympic player. I am tremendously blessed to have the opportunity to play on Team USA and to play with such great players. The standard was set with that first great Dream Team and I think a lot of people assumed that they'd bring Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson back. It's a blessing to have an opportunity to play with these great players and at some point in my career represent my country.
