With two new starters in the lineup, the Nuggets upset the San Antonio Spurs 102-92 at the Pepsi Center. After a 116-78 loss to Utah two days earlier, Nuggets coach Dan Issel said he wanted to see more fire, so he replaced starting shooting guard Tariq Abdul-Wahad with Voshon Lenard and starting center Raef LaFrentz with Keon Clark. Clark had eight points on 3-of-10 shooting and seven rebounds in 30 minutes, while LaFrentz had six points on 3-of-6 shooting, three rebounds and five fouls in 16 minutes. Lenard scored 14 points, including two 3-pointers, and Abdul-Wahad had two points and one rebound in 12 minutes. But the main firepower was provided by guard Nick Van Exel. After coming off a combined 4-for-18 shooting night against Utah, Van Exel had a near triple-double with 27 points, 13 assists and a seasonhigh nine rebounds. "Everyone contributed," Van Exel said. Nelson also demonstrated that while G/F Michael Finley is his go-to-guy on most nights, he'll call another player's number if he likes that matchup better. With the bigger but slower Austin Croshere guarding SG Greg Buckner while Croshere was saddled with five fouls, Nelson called plays for Buckner on three straight possessions, resulting in three Buckner baskets.
