Extractions: Hongan urakka FIBA Euroopan liigassa päättyi tiistaina 74-99-kotitappioon Ural Great Permille. Liigan C-lohkon voittanut venäläisjoukkue osoittautui eri maiden maajoukkuepelureineen sekä amerikanapuineen maineensa veroiseksi nipuksi. Hongan kaadossa tehokkainta jälkeä teki urallaan 586 NBA-ottelua pelannut Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. Tapiolan Urheiluhalliin oli saapunut täysi katsomollinen ihmettelemään Ural Greatin nimimiesten taitoja. Abdul-Rauf ei paikalle saapuneita pettänyt, vaan pisti heti shown pystyyn.

Extractions: FORT MADISON, Iowa - The most recent scrimmage in the "culture war" was played on a basketball court. Mahmoud Abdul- Rauf, a guard for the National Basketball Association's Denver Nuggets, was suspended indefinitely without pay by the league for not standing at attention during the playing of the national anthem. In an interview I saw on television he said he refused to stand because (1) as a Muslim his religion prohibits "nationalistic demonstrations," and (2) for him the "Star Spangled Banner" symbolizes "the oppression of Caucasians and African Americans." Both good reasons, I thought. After all, what does the national anthem have to do with the game? I wouldn't want such a requirement on my job. Here in prison we have to stand at our bars during three daily counts, but we can still read, talk, or whatever, while we do. Most of the guys I talked with about this agreed that Abdul- Rauf was within his rights and that the NBA would probably back down. To them, it was a free-speech issue. More than a few, however, had a different opinion. "How would he like it if I came into his church and lit a cigarette? Sooner or later people like him will find out that whites are going to stop watching basketball. He's ruining the game," was one long- time sports fan's comment. Another argument I heard quite a bit was, "He knew what he was getting into when he signed his multi- million dollar contract. He knew the rules then and he should follow them now."

Extractions: Johnny Jones When Johnny Jones arrived as a freshman on the LSU campus in 1980 as an all-state guard and one of the nations top recruits, he brought with him the nickname The Bullet, which helped make him an instant hit with Tiger basketball fans. After all, LSU could already boast having Pistol Pete Maravich in its storied past. Now, it had The Bullet. Jones went on to help lead LSU to one of the most successful chapters in the schools basketball history, including an appearance in the NCAA Final Four in 1981. But that experience was just the beginning for Jones, whose lifelong career in basketball not only includes that trip to the Final Four, but another Final Four appearance as an assistant coach, as well as seven other coaching trips to the NCAA playoffs and two NIT berths as an assistant coach. It was no wonder that Jones background as a winner both on the court and from the sidelines made him the leading choice to take over the North Texas Mean Green two years ago.
Extractions: UNT hires new men's basketball coach Johnny Jones, who has played on and helped coach teams that advanced to the NCAA Final Four, has been named head men's basketball coach at UNT by new athletic director Rick Villarreal. The 40-year-old Jones, who last season was an assistant coach at the University of Alabama, becomes the 15th coach to head the men's basketball program at UNT. "I think with the hiring of Johnny Jones we've made a tremendous move toward becoming successful in our men's basketball program," says Villarreal. "He has a great talent as a recruiter, as a coach and as a molder of young men. I think the fact that he's already got most of his staff in place and is already on the recruiting trail speaks volumes about his being prepared for this job." A former four-year letterman at Louisiana State University, Jones has spent the last 17 seasons coaching in the collegiate ranks. Before joining the Alabama staff last season, Jones coached for three seasons at the University of Memphis, including two seasons as associate head coach and one as the Tigers' interim head coach during the 1999-2000 season.
