Extractions: (Updated Wednesday, Apr 10, 2002, 09:46:27 AM) ypher Hideo Nomo led the Asian invasion in spectacular fashion when he donned Dodger blue in 1994. His outlandish corkscrew delivery may have helped draw even more media glare than was warranted by his meteoric rise and fall (and recent re-emergence) as a pitching talent. His Dodger teammate Chanho Park, who came from Corea in 1995, showed that an Asian hurler could have staying power too not to mention ultimately command seven-figure annual salaries. Now the Mariners are stealing the Asian baseball spotlight with the dazzling $13 million Ichiro Suzuki. Halfway into his rookie season here, he was leading the league in hits and steals, not to mention drawing $2 million magazine offers to pose nude. His reward an All-Star slot along with Chanho Park. Even better, their respective teams stand an excellent chance of meeting in the World Series. Currently six other Asian ballers mostly Japanese and Corean imports are playing in the American majors and are, for the most part, doing well. That's why scouts are now laying the groundwork for importing as many as 15 more young stars from Japan, Corea and even Taiwan in time for the 2002 season. Admittedly, even a contingent of 24 Asian ballplayers would be only 5% of a combined major league roster of about 500. But if Nomo, Park and Suzuki are any indication, they could have a significant impact on the Asian male media image.

If you're like most fans, you probably got two, Hideo Nomo of the Dodgers and Hideki Irabu of the Yankees. However, there are currently four Japanese imports pitching in the bigs, and they just happen to pitch not too far from where Nomo and Irabu play their home games. The "other" two pitchers are the Angels' Shigetoshi Hasegawa, and the Mets' Masato Yoshii. We could profile all four pitchers, but do you really think Nomo and Irabu need any more hype?

Extractions: September 22 Yoshii started for the first time since July 7. In 6 innings, he gave up only one run. The Expos defeated the Colorado Rockies 3 to 1. And Yoshii clinched his 4th win. August 8 Yoshii picked up a win at last after pitching in many games. He pitched from the 10th inning against the St Louis Cardinals when the game was a tie. The Expos scored in the 11th inning, to lead 6 to 5, and Yoshii earned his 3rd win. July 7 After pitching in the middle of several games, Yoshii was again a starter. In this game he gave up 3 runs of which he was accounted for 2 until the 5th inning. The Toronto Blue Jays finished the game 9 to 8. Yoshii's record was not tainted. June 23 Until the 3rd inning, it appeared Yoshii was pitching smoothly. But the 4th inning was tragic. Yoshii, pitched until the end of that inning giving up 6 runs. And the Expos lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 to 7. Yoshii succumbed to his 5th loss. June 18 Yoshii pitched 6 0/3 innings during which he lost only 2 runs. But as the Expos lost to the New York Mets 1 to 2, he had to take his 4th loss. He did not get to face Tsuyoshi Shinjo.
