Extractions: Chillin at the beach down at Club Med -Beastie Boys I'm back and refreshed. I barely paid attention to anything related to Major League Baseball the past week and a half, and it was a good break. What's not good is how the Twins have been playing. Losing back-to-back series to the Royals and the Devil Rays is absolutely terrible and today they're hoping for a split series again with D'Rays. At home. These games should have been coast time for the Twins. It should have been like playing Metal Gear Solid and knowing all the cheat codes. In short, these are all games that they should have won. Easily. The Twins have been playing more like the Devil Rays than the Devil Rays. Sure, they had a nice 16-4 butt whuppin' of the D'Rays the other night, but you don't go lose four of seven to the freakin' Bad News Bears of the American League. It's just sad to listen to. Meanwhile, the Chicago Whine Sox sit atop the American League Central, usurping all of our power and glory. Speaking of listening, I'm trying a little experiment this season. As regular readers know, I shut my cable TV off in protest of the whole Twins/Victory Sports debacle. I have yet to turn it on. Instead, I've been listening to all of the games on WCCO 830 AM. It's an interesting experiment, and I can't decide which I like better, radio or TV. I miss actually seeing the games, but baseball really was made for the radio.

Extractions: Bullpen spoils the ending LARRY LARUE; The News Tribune MINNEAPOLIS - The last thing the Seattle Mariners can afford to do this year is give away games. And that was the last thing they did Tuesday. On the final pitch of a long night, a bloop single dropped into center field, Randy Winn threw it to the plate and catcher Dan Wilson couldn't hold it as Shannon Stewart went over him to score in the 11th inning. Minnesota 7, Seattle 6. "I've got to make that play," Wilson said. "The ball was there in time. I don't know that I ever had control of it ..." It was a dramatic play that pushed the Mariners' losing streak to two games, but it was hardly the story in this one. There shouldn't have been an 11th inning. Or a 10th.

Extractions: Advanced Search / Archives Preferences Despite thirteen losses and many injuries, the Chicago Maroons baseball team managed to put together a successful season marked by impressive offensive and defensive performances. Chicago finished with twenty-four wins, giving the graduating fourth-year class 24-, 25-, and 26-win seasons and a total of 89 wins over four years. This makes the eight Maroon seniors the winningest class of players in the one hundred and eleven-year history of Chicago baseballsurely not a disappointing run by any means. The teams wins this season had a lot to do with their outstanding production at the plate. For most of the campaign, Chicago led all Division III teams in runs per game. This was no surprise, however, with the experienced offensive weapons Chicago had in its lineup. Two such threats, fourth-years Nick Kocinski and Jim Raptis, began the season chasing batting records and looking to contribute consistently, as they have their whole careers. In the season finale against Trinity Christian, each Maroon collected his 61st hit of the season, matching the school record for hits in a single season set by All-American Mark Mosier in 1996.
Dan Lewis On The Baseball Players Union On NRO Financial By dan Lewis. Regardless of reflexive ideological corners, in baseball, the players and example, have almost $17 million promised to wilson Alvarez (6.32 ERA http://www.nationalreview.com/nrof_comment/comment-lewis080202.asp
Extractions: By Dan Lewis he Major League Baseball players union began in 1966 when their first executive director, Marvin Miller, was recruited by pitcher (and now Hall of Famer) Robin Roberts. In his book, A Whole Different Ball Game , Miller recounts an early admission by Roberts: the idea of a union wasn't a very popular one, even among the players, for political reasons. Writes Miller, quoting Roberts, "Most players are conservative. They don't know anything about unions. In fact, to many, especially guys from small towns down south, 'union' is a dirty word." And yes, baseball's union battles look like many others: the big, fat-cat bosses versus the union on which their trade relies. In just about any other case, you'd be able to side "living wage" activists and liberals with the union, and conservatives and free marketeers with the owners in their fight against overpaying for labor. But baseball's union isn't like most others. Regardless of reflexive ideological corners, in baseball, the players and the union are the allies of capitalism. In 1975, a one-sided, anti-free market rule called the "reserve clause" effectively met its end. The clause had given teams the option to unilaterally extend a player's contract once it expired, provided that the player was under contract with the team before. In essence, players were bound to the same team for life. But with Miller's guidance, the clause would be redefined. Teams could no longer exercise this option for perpetuity. Instead, owners were granted absolute control over a player's career for a certain amount of time. After that, a player would be free to seek a new contract with whatever team he wished.

Extractions: MWLguide.com History Profiles Willie Wilson Profiles: Index Willie Wilson was South Bend's hitting coach in 2001. This was Wilson's second MWL stint: In 1975, he led the Midwest League's best team ever to a championship. The Royals paid Willie Wilson a reported $90,000 to sign a contract after high school in 1974. This was a large bonus; Willie was being recruited to play college football. KC assigned him to their Gulf Coast team, where he led the league in stolen bases. The next summer the Royals promoted Wilson to Waterloo, where he won Most Valuable Player and Prospect of the Year awards with this unlikely stat line: New Profiles G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI AVG SB 127 486 92 132 18 4 8 73 .272 76 The hits and steals figures led the league. Willie also led the league in outfield assists, with 17, and got hit by 13 pitches. Willie spent 1976 at Jacksonville in the Southern League, with a short Kansas City callup. 1977 was mostly at Omaha, in the American Association, with another KC appearance. In '78 he reached the big leagues for good. Over the next dozen years Wilson was the leadoff hitter for the great George Brett Royals. His best season was 1980133 runs scored and 230 hits, with a .326 batting average. He played four seasons near that high level, winning the American League batting title in 1982 (.322), then recorded many KC and two Oakland seasons that echo his Midwest League stat line.
