Extractions: Friedman Diamond (Brookline, MA) Vermont's Kyle Rikert singled in Todd Grzywacz in the top of the eighth as the Catamounts topped the Huskies 7-6. Earlier in the game, Rikert tied the Vermont record for career stolen bases with his 78th. Brendan Ryan was 4-4 with four RBIs to lead the Huskies at the plate. Doug Thomspson (1-0) picked up the win for Vermont, while Justin Bissonnette earned his second save after working a scoreless eighth and stranding the tying run at second. Ken Henry (1-3) took the loss for the Huskies. With the game tied at five, the Catamounts scored the go-ahead run on a Dennis Moser pinch hit double that drove home Jeff Tarigo in the top of the seventh. NU tied the game in the last of the seventh as Ryan drove in his fourth run of the game with a single that scored Mike Lomuscio. The Huskies then had the bases loaded with one out, but Thompson worked out the jam by getting NUs Todd Korchin to line to third and then striking out pinch-hitter Jordan Thomson to end the threat. The Huskies led 4-0 after three innings, but the Catamounts got two in the fourth and then tied the game on a two-out, two-run blast by Tarigo off NU starter Chris Walsh in the fifth.

Fan favorite. The Franchise. "The man." Team MVP. Marquee player. You've heard all the clichés. Even if you're a casual fan you can probably name your favorite team's franchise player, though sometimes you might have trouble explaining exactly why he is. While most teams have a clear-cut franchise player: Ken Griffey Jr. in Seattle; Barry Bonds in San Francisco. Other times it's not so clear. What's a fan to do? Enter strikethree.com. Today, it's the AL Central. These selections are based mostly on pure statistics, but in a few special cases stats don't tell the whole story. Intangibles such as leadership, fan following, health and age also play a role. The statistics you'll see are three-year averages for 1995-1997. Manny Ramirez, Cleveland

Extractions: June 21, 2001 - June 20, 2002 My son Justin was born on June 21, 2001. My husband and I couldn't be happier. Finally we had our son. And our family was complete, with a 2 year old daughter named Taylor. Life couldn't get any better. I am a stay at home mom, and spent all my time with my children. My life was my children. Justin was always happy, always had a smile on his face. Taylor and Justin had such a special bond, the bond only a brother and sister have. And the bond I shared with him can never be replaced. My husband Wayne was so happy to finally have a boy. Someone to teach baseball, and to take fishing. But never in a million years did I think something so tragic could happen. Before they flew him they had to prepare him to fly. They inserted a breathing tube, and sedated him. I never knew at this point he wasn't going to wake up. When the helicopter arrived they told us he was getting worse and to get to DuPont right away. How can they tell you that and then expect you to drive? It was the longest drive of our lives. We arrived at 11:00 a.m. When we got there they pretty much told us that he wasn't going to make it and to be prepared. We went to see him and he looked horrible, all the tubes and the purple had spread all over his body. We never left his side. My mother and one sister were there with us also. We were told to put protective gear on and my husband and I felt no way, not for our baby. They gave Justin 2 blood transfusions and had every possible medicine being pumped into him.
