He had the support of the majority of fans, but the media was not as kind. Aside from constantly hounding him, many once-friendly journalists turned on him, trying and convicting him well before the investigation concluded.

Players, coaches and reporters milled about the floor of the closed SkyDome, scattered here and there in conversation, observation and instruction. Men leaned on the batting cage, watched line drives sail to the outfield and chatted about the game. It was the afternoon of the Jays first interleague match against Pittsburgh, and the daily machinations of a major-league team which most fans rarely see were proceeding at their usual pace. Third baseman Eric Hinske, rehabbing from wrist surgery, had his glove ready and was eager to take infield practice. But he was going to have to wait a little longer, because his defensive instructor, third-base coach Brian Butterfield, was taking the time to grant Batters Box the first of four exclusive interviews with the Blue Jays coaching staff.

Extractions: Rose never heard of the Black Sox? Rose never saw the rules against gambling that I believe are posted in every clubhouse? Please. By the way, there was a Baseball Prospectus story about Rose being reinstated last August. I reported on it here . That same day, Bob DuPay denied the story . Now, some are saying Rose's admission vindicates the BP story. Not quite. Here's what they said Pete Rose and Major League Baseball have reached an agreement that would allow him to return to baseball in 2004, and includes no admission of wrongdoing by Rose , Baseball Prospectus has learned. According to several sources, Rose signed the agreement after a series of pre-season meetings between Rose, Hall of Fame member Mike Schmidt, and at different times, high-level representatives of Major League Baseball, including Bob DuPuy, Major League Baseball's Chief Operating Officer, and Allan H. "Bud" Selig, Commissioner of Major League Baseball.

Extractions: Main January 03, 2004 Rose Interview ABC has landed an exclusive interview with Pete Rose to coincide with the release of his book on Jan. 8 Hard hitting reporter and sports journalist Morning fluff show host Charles Gibson will get the assignment. Where's Sam Donaldson to scoff at every statement Rose makes? Or why not John Saunders? John was among the best anchors I worked with at ESPN. He's intelligent, knows baseball inside-out, and won't hesitate to ask the tough questions. Or how about dipping into the ESPN talent pool and tapping Bob Ley, Mr. Outside the Lines himself? It sounds to me as if Rose granted the interview to whomever would give him the most softballs to hit. The tough guy doesn't look like he wants to face the heat. Posted by StatsGuru at 07:58 AM Interviews TrackBack (1) Comments I think Rose got Charlie Gibson because Gibson is the most visible ABC person. Remember that part of the interview (cliffhanger?) will be on Gibson's Good Morning America the next day. I think this was more about the ratings instead of the softballs, thought I agree that Bob Ley would have been IDEAL. I'm hoping there's more interviews down the line.
