First, he shocked baseball fans worldwide by canceling a 15th Anniversary celebration of the movie, Bull Durham for fear that Susan Sarandon or Tim Robbins might say something. Now, he has invited former Atlanta Braves pitcher, John Rocker to speak at the hall. For those who don't remember, In December of 1999, Sports Illustrated interviewed Rocker on his feelings toward, the New York Mets, and their fans. He used that interview to blast everything about New York in hateful language. His comments included, "Imagine having to take the [No.] 7 train to [Shea Stadium] looking like youre [in] Beirut next to some kid with purple hair, next to some queer with AIDS, right next to some dude who got out of jail for the fourth time, right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. Its depressing." He didn't stop there, but went on to rant, "The biggest thing I dont like about New York are the foreigners, You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. ... How the hell did they get in this country? We asked Petroskey why he would not allow Robbins and Sarandon even to appear at the hall, but was offering Rocker a podium and a microphone. He told us, " I have said all I am going to say about canceling the Bull Durham event. I am inviting John Rocker to speak because I think John Rocker is a fine example of what Baseball and America are all about. He is only a controversial figure because those liberal Hollywood types in the media took his comments out of context."

After months of seemingly incessant condemnation, the public seems to want Rocker off of "Wanted" posters and back on the mound. When he returned home to Atlanta's Turner Field on Tues., Apr. 18, after a two-week suspension, Braves fans greeted the former scapegoat with a standing ovation. The public's response to Rocker turned quickly from outrage to approbation in part because he is a great pitcher. Last year, Rocker notched 38 saves—the second most in franchise history—and managed an awesome 104 strikeouts in 72 innings. During his suspension, the Braves lost six of 12 games, blew two saves, and registered a 5.14 earned run average (ERA). "He's a talented pitcher, and that's what this is really all about," manager Bobby Cox commented.

Extractions: John Rocker has been traded from the Atlanta Braves to the Cleveland Indians , an event that has not been without a great deal of attention. Trading players from one team to another is not unusual; indeed, it is a routine occurrence in the business of baseball. But, John Rocker is a special case, and one wonders if the respective teams knew what was at issue. Rocker is at best grossly immature, and at worst, he is a certifiable bigot whose on- and off-the-field antics and utterances are despicable. Certainly, he is considerably less than a wholesome representative for major league baseball. Not surprisingly, both teams made light of his personality and the extreme negativism he brings. They would have you believe that the trade helped both teams. Perhaps so, but the belief here is that it had become necessary to move Rocker out of Atlanta. Whether he brings his act to Cleveland or straightens out remains to be seen. Let us remember just a couple of years ago Rocker was fined and suspended by major league baseball for inappropriate remarks and actions. His comments in New York last week following a game with the Yankees were consistent with what Rocker is all about.
