Extractions: The Cincinnati Enquirer A lot is made about the sacrifices athletes make to obtain greatness. But it is fair to say no one gave up more than Tony Perez to get to the top of his game. Perez left his country, his family and his life to make it as a big-leaguer. Perez, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame Sunday, left Cuba in 1960 to join the Reds' farm club at Geneva, N.Y. He returned home after his first three years in the minors. But as the United States' relationship with Fidel Castro's Cuba grew more icy, Tony's father, Jose, told him it was too dangerous to come back. If baseball was to be Tony's life, he would have to leave Cuba behind. HALL OF FAME WEEK The Enquirer is running a weeklong series of Hall of Fame stories leading to Sunday's inductions:

Extractions: Tony, Sparky and Marty going into the Hall of Fame together? Nothing could be sweeter for baseball's oldest franchise. And it could very well happen. Tony Perez was elected to the Hall of Fame Tuesday. Former manager Sparky Anderson is eligible to be elected by the veterans committee. Radio voice Marty Brennaman, narrowly missed being being elected to broadcast wing last year. Perez and Charlton Fisk will be inducted into the Hall at Cooperstown, N.Y., on July 23, along with anyone elected by the veterans' committee. Brennaman could go in as the Frick Award winner, selected by a separate committee. Anderson said he has thought about it. "It would be unbelievable," he said, "the moment of a lifetime." Tuesday, Brennaman was thrilled with the news that Perez was in. Brennaman thought Perez's election came later than it should have. It was Perez's ninth year of eligibility. The careers of Perez, Anderson and Brennaman will be forever intertwined as part of the Big Red Machine era.

Extractions: Dan Miceli was right. Too public, too personal but accurate in his criticism of former Marlins manager John Boles. Ridiculous with his claim that only former major leaguers make good managers but correct about the Marlins needing a change. Miceli is gone now, waived by the team he helped rescue. But his legacy endures in the renewed passion of the Marlins' Hispanic players, the reduced tension in the team's clubhouse and the respect for Boles' replacement, Tony Perez. The change from Boles, a longtime personnel man who never played minor or major league baseball, to Perez, the former leader of the Big Red Machine, was the perfect move for an impressionable young club. The Marlins still act their agethey closed out June by dropping four out of four in Philadelphia after winning four straight series to pull within two games of first place. Still, they had the majors' fourth-lowest ERA (3.86) for the month and were tied for the fourth-highest victory total (16).

Extractions: Born: February 22, 1934, at Bridgewater, South Dakota. Connie Mack and John McGraw With Anderson at the helm for nine seasons, the Reds won 863 games, four pennants, and won more than 90 games seven times. Spurred by a lineup that included Joe Morgan , Pete Rose, and Johnny Bench , the Big Red Machine averaged more than 100 wins per season from 1972 through 1976. Anderson guided the team to World Series victories in 1975, a dramatic, hard-fought win over the Red Sox; and 1976, a dominating sweep of the Yankees. After the 1978 season Anderson left the Reds. The next year he joined the Detroit Tigers in mid-season and picked up where he had left off, posting a winning record in each of his first 10 years with Detroit. In 1984 his inspired Tigers team, led by Jack Morris, Alan Trammell, and Lou Whitaker, defeated the San Diego Padres in the World Series. The key moment came in Game 5, when Kirk Gibson hit the series-winning home run off ace reliever Goose Gossage.
