Extractions: ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS ATLANTA BRAVES LHP Mike Hampton says his recent groin problems have helped his mechanics. Hampton, who beat the Mariners last week, has a habit of rushing his delivery, but he found himself slowing down and establishing a good rhythm while protecting himself from further injury. Hampton showed a lively sinker and good control against Seattle.... IF Mark DeRosa is drawing on his pinch-hitting experiences to deal with DH duties during interleague play. DeRosa, like many in the game, believes pinch hitting is the most difficult thing to do in baseball. Some players don't like being a DH, but he says the idea of having three or four at-bats in a game rather than one makes the DH role a welcome change. DeRosa was 3-for-13 (.231) as a pinch hitter at the beginning of the week. CHICAGO CUBS The team took a quick look at one of its top prospects, OF David Kenton. Kelton, who replaced 1B Hee Seop Choi on the roster after Chin (concussion) went on the D.L., played three games for the Cubs, batting .250 in eight at-bats before returning to Class AAA Iowa. A converted third baseman, Kelton was moved to the outfield at his request because of injuries that led to throwing problems. He is considered a much better hitter than fielder, regardless of position.... Kelton's replacement is hard-throwing reliever RHP Francis Beltran. Beltran's biggest challenge is throwing strikes; he walked 16 in 12 innings last season.... OFs Tom Goodwin and Troy O'Leary received considerable playing time in place of suspended RF Sammy Sosa. Goodwin and O'Leary alternated between left and fight field last week, with Moises Alou serving as the primary DH in interleague games at Baltimore and Toronto.

Red Sox By Shira Springer, Globe Staff, 10/1/2003 An adherence to routine and regularity has defined the career and public persona of Nomar Garciaparra. Never is that more evident than when he is at bat. Any kid asked to imitate Garciaparra will tug at imaginary batting gloves while shifting an imaginary bat from shoulder to shoulder. There is the same sort of predictability when Garciaparra answers questions from reporters. Inevitably, he will emphasize the team concept, that no one player is more important than another. Garciaparra divulges little about himself. He just wants to be one of the guys. ADVERTISEMENT What appears compulsive on the field and sounds aloof in the clubhouse is all part of the Garciaparra superstar package. His fiancee, Mia Hamm, is known as a reluctant superstar. Garciaparra is reluctant about being viewed apart from his teammates. He signs autographs before every contest, gamely makes public appearances for charity, and in general recognizes his role as the face of the Red Sox. But mention hitting streaks, MVP awards or anything remotely personal and Garciaparra becomes monosyllabic. The unrestrained praise comes from the rest of the Red Sox. His teammates pick out different highlights, different epiphanies when they realized, or rediscovered, just how talented Garciaparra is. The two grand slams on May 10, 1999. The consecutive batting titles in 1999 and 2000. The ability to take care of balls in the hole and balls up the middle. The All-Star shortstop, however, would prefer to shrug off all the compliments.

Hypertext Now: Patterns, Narrative, And Baseball To watch baseball well demands an eye for montage, for many things are always As wewatch troy O Leary grab the rebound off Fenway s leftfield wall and peg to http://www.eastgate.com/HypertextNow/archives/Baseball.html
Extractions: what's new The patterns and structures of hypertext narrative sometimes seem complex, and a few critics dismiss hypertext because it does not always fit into familiar dramatic structures. But hypertext's patterns are not confined to avant-garde experiments; the patterns that help us understand hypertext fiction are patterns we see in other large-scale narratives journalism, history, memoir, and technical writing. Farther afield from the friendly confines of literature, the narratives of sport are also large and complex. Perhaps the patterns of hypertext may seem less forbidding as we find them in the narratives of professional baseball. While pundits fret that television and new media somehow make the audience passive and inattentive, thoughtful observation reveals surprising scope and depth even in popular entertainment. Cycles are central to hypertext and to baseball. In hypertext fiction, the rhythms of recurrence created by intersecting link paths are perhaps the central feature. Cycles pervade baseball. The game's rhythms create a host of cycles, large and small: the rotation of batters through the order, the rotation of starting pitchers through the week, the stately progress of opponents through the schedule, the annual race for the pennant which particularly for Cubs fans begins each year with a Spring of new hope, a Summer of struggle, an Autumn of resignation and faith. (The Cubs last won a pennant in 1946)
