Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Red Sox By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff, 2/7/2004 The Patriots' Super Bowl afterglow is blinding. It's still stronger than anything on the Boston sports scene. But in two weeks, the Red Sox will again be front and center, trying to forge their own memories and trying to lift the burden the franchise has carried for the past 85 years. ADVERTISEMENT That burden got a little heavier after the historically disappointing Game 7 loss to the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series last October. Over the past couple of days, the Sox, who did make headlines during the football season with their pursuit of AL MVP Alex Rodriguez, allowed the Patriots their moment in the sun. The Sox started making news again when they signed veteran designated hitter Ellis Burks to a one-year deal Thursday and yesterday inked Trot Nixon to a three-year deal worth $19.5 million. The Nixon signing was the first positive breakthrough in deciding the future of the Magnificent 7, Boston's heralded group that was eligible for free agency after this season. It was also a message to Pedro Martinez, Derek Lowe, Scott Williamson, Jason Varitek, Nomar Garciaparra, and David Ortiz that Nixon didn't, in the words of Sox general manager Theo Epstein, hold out for "every last dollar," and made the lure of winning a championship and playing in Boston among his top priorities. "Trot and his agent, Ron Shapiro, demonstrated aggressively right from the outset through their words and eventually through their actions that staying in Boston was their absolute priority," Epstein said. "And so we entered a negotiation with them based on their desire to stay here. In the end, they deserve all the credit because they didn't try to max out dollars and didn't try to max out years. They took a realistic approach at a contract that made sense for the player and made sense for the club."

Red Sox By Dan Shaughnessy, Globe Columnist, 10/5/2003 Carlton Fisk and now Trot Nixon. ADVERTISEMENT It's easy to believe that church bells in some New England towns were ringing at 11:18 last night just as they did when Fisk hit his home run for the ages in the immortal sixth game of the 1975 World Series. Nixon's parabolic, pinch-hit blast into Fenway's center-field bleachers gave the Red Sox a 3-1, 11th-inning, 24th-hour, controversy-spiced, walkoff win over the Oakland A's in the third game of their American League Division Series. It was one of the more remarkable postseason games in the 103-year history of the Red Sox, but mirrored many of the fantastic finishes that marked Boston's 2003 campaign. The victory keeps the Red Sox alive for another day. The Sox trail the A's two games to one in the best-of-five series, which resumes this afternoon at 1, just a little over 13 hours after last night's final pitch.

Extractions: Trot Nixon is the kind of player everyone loves to watch, whether he's diving headfirst into the stands after a foul ball or stretching a double into a triple. It's easy to see he is giving his best effort on every play. After a slow start in his first full season, Trot found a groove, and has not let up since. He's becoming known around the league as a tough out at the plate, and a dead end for balls hit to right field. His game-winning two-run homer in the now legendary Martinez/Clemens matchup in New York in 2000 catapulted him to cult-hero status in Boston. His first night back at Fenway after that game, he received a standing ovation in his first at-bat, and promptly hit another two-run shot. In 2001, Trot finally got the chance to be an everyday player, and he finally had the breakout year fans had been anticipating. With Carl Everett injured in June, Trot took over center field and settled into the 3-spot in the line-up. He finished the season with a .280 average, 27 home runs, 100 runs scored, and a gritty style of play that became one of the lone bright spots in an otherwise lost summer. Trot is the ultimate "Dirt Dog," giving his all on every play, even when the team is out of contention. Hopefully Trot will remain a fixture in Fenway's outfield, as well as in its folklore, for many years to come.

Extractions: Trot Nixon displays a photo of his son, Chase, who was born on Sept. 11, 2001. AP By John Donovan, CNNSI.com BOSTON As he wound his way toward Boston a year ago, the world in chaos around him, Trot Nixon saw the hideous black smoke over Washington, D.C. A short while later, peering through the darkness, he gaped at the gray cloud hovering over New York City. The radio droned on with the terrible news. The miles inched by. Trot, his mom, dad and sister with him, pushed the borrowed truck faster and faster along the highway, skirting blockades, rushing to get to an appointment they'd already missed. It was Sept. 11, 2001, and Trot Nixon, the right fielder for the Boston Red Sox , had to get home. There are thousands and thousands of stories about perhaps the most infamous day in American history. Some are heartbreaking. Some are horrifying. Trot Nixon's odyssey, thankfully, is neither. It starts with Trot and the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium in New York, sitting through a rainout, then hopping on a plane to Tampa, Fla., for the next series. Trot had barely made it to his hotel room, had just lain down after almost no sleep he had played cards almost the whole flight when the phone rang.
