Extractions: Naehring dives into charity work By Tim Pennington, Post contributor Tim Naehring spends a lot of afternoons these days toiling with the infield dirt at Fenway Park, raking it into place and making sure all is well near his favorite spot at third base. But the Boston Red Sox third baseman and La Salle High School graduate isn't in Massachusetts this summer. Instead, a career-threatening elbow injury has reduced Naehring to working the infield at the Fenway Park replica he helped build along Interstate 74. ''A guy pulled his car in here the other day and was admiring the field,'' Naehring said. ''Then he started pointing out certain things that didn't match exactly the real Fenway Park. ''He didn't know who I was, but when I told him I helped design the field, he turned to me and says, ''Then you've never been to the real Fenway Park, have you?' said Naehring, a seven-year veteran of the real Fenway. He can laugh now, but this has been a season of physical and emotional pain for Naehring, 31, who also played at Miami University. He was coming off one of his best seasons when he made an off-balance throw in Toronto in June 1997. He knew instantly something was seriously wrong with his elbow.

Extractions: By Bob Queenan, Post staff reporter The Reds are interested in Boston Red Sox free agent infielder Tim Naehring, club officials said Friday. ''We have expressed interest in Tim, who filed for free agency only yesterday,'' said Reds general manager Jim Bowden. The Red Sox declined a $3.25-million option on the 6-foot-2, 203-pound third baseman, making him eligible for free agency. Naehring, a graduate of La Salle High School who played at Miami University, did not play in 1998. He spent the season recovering from offseason surgery on the right elbow of his throwing arm. The injury occurred when he made an off-balance throw in Toronto in June 1997. Naehring suffered a torn ligament and a tear in the capsule that holds the joint together. ''We're in the development stage of our club, and a player like Tim would add to our veteran leadership,'' said Darrell ''Doc'' Rodgers, the Reds assistant general manager. Naehring was vacationing and unavailable for comment, said an associate at Athletes Reaching Out, a charity he started three years ago. Attempts to contact his representative, Boston agent Greg Clifton, were unsuccessful. ''A healthy Tim Naehring can flat-out hit the baseball,'' said Bowden. ''He knows how to play the game and would definitely join Barry Larkin and Bret Boone as positive examples of how to play the game. He is also a performer who would benefit a club after his playing days are over.

TOP 10 PROSPECTS Here are the 10 prospects Reds director of player development Tim Naehring rates as being closest to the big leagues (in alphabetical order): Made it to Triple-A with the Yankees last year. Fastball in upper 90s. He'll be up if Sean Casey goes on DL. Had 27 2Bs, 23 HRs last year. Pokey Reese II. Can field, but will he hit enough? Look for him to be at Cinergy some time this year. Good stuff, but Reds would like to see better results. Has 21-31 career record in minors. Polished player. Needs to overcome thumb injury. Was the best fielder in the major-league camp. Needs to improve as a hitter. Only one of the 10 who wasn't in the big-league camp. Won 10 games at Single-A Dayton last year. Incredible talent. Will he ever put it all together? That's the difference between Sammy Sosa and Ruben Rivera.

Derek Zumsteg If you know me, and research says you do, then you know one of my favorite subjects in baseball is money and how it gets spent. Every GM makes mistakes (even my hero, Houston GM Gerry Hunsicker, has Pete the Incaviligian on the roster), but the difference between Hunsicker and, say, Pat Gillick is that Hunsicker can assemble a team for half the budget that wins half as many more games. With that in mind, let's look at the current crop of free agent talent. I've skipped players like Jeff Bagwell that could be free agents but most likely will not; if I'm wrong, drop me sarcastic email . I'll be updating this regularly until next season, so there'll be time to fix everything. For today, content yourself with the position players; next week I'll get to the pitchers.

It looks like that will be true of the National League again this year, but both 1997 and 1998 look fairly dismal in the American. The top six players at the position are all from the senior circuit. Then, once you get past Robin Ventura and John Valentin (projected to take the place of the oft-injured Tim Naehring), the next-best AL third basemen are Joe Randa and Russ Davis, both of whom figure to be only average. Ken Caminiti, Chipper Jones, Bobby Bonilla, Scott Rolen and Vinny Castilla should all do well again. Compared to his peers, Castilla gets a great deal of benefit from Coors, so I've discounted his OPS by 7% in calculating runs (more on that in another column.) There were very few aberrant offensive peformances from third last year. Matt Williams' dropoff can be attributed to the distractions of his divorce and subsequent long-distance relationship with his son. Although his problems have been well publicized in the off-season, those of many other players aren't.
