SignOnSanDiego.com > Sports -- Millwood Expects To Return To Old Form kevin millwood is going he did in Atlanta and the first part of last season, millwoodwill anchor a rotation that could be one of the best in baseball. http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/baseball/20040325-1350-bbn-phillies-millwoo
Extractions: ASSOCIATED PRESS 1:50 p.m. March 25, 2004 Kevin Millwood is going back to his old windup, hoping to regain his All-Star form. Millwood, entering his second season with the Philadelphia Phillies, knows he is a better pitcher than the one who faltered during the pennant race last season. The right-hander went 14-12 with a 4.01 ERA, and pitched a no-hitter against San Francisco on April 27. But he went 0-3 with two no-decisions in his last five starts, including two disappointing outings against eventual World Series champion Florida. At the time, the Phillies and Marlins were battling for a wild-card berth. "I know what I can do and everybody here knows what I can do," Millwood said Thursday. "I had one bad month and it turned out to be September and that's what everybody remembers." Millwood started 8-2 last season, before losing 10 of his last 16 decisions. He attributed some of his problems to a change in his mechanics. At some point, he started raising his arms over his head during the windup. He also used a higher leg kick, which allowed runners to steal bases easily on him. Runners were successful stealing 45 of 49 times with Millwood on the mound.
Baseball Musings: Phillies Trade For Millwood: Atlanta Braves for righthanded pitcher kevin millwood, General Manager But the Bravestrade millwood for a 2nd by StatsGuru at 0109 PM baseball. Navigation. http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/002183.php
Extractions: So the remaking of the Braves rotation is complete . They're keeping both Marquis and Maddux, but the third M is off to division rival Philadelphia. This should be a very interesting battle in the NL East next year. Phillies have no doubt improved themselves. The Braves are strong but with question marks. Atlanta could easily run away with the division again, but I think the Phillies will challenge, and I think the Phillies are in a good position for when the new ballpark opens in 2004. And again, the luxury tax is looking more like a salary cap, where Atlanta wasn't able to keep one of it's better pitchers. Update: Shawn Bernard is shocked by this trade:

Extractions: Philadelphia May Need To Be Patient With Their New Ace No, Im not here to horn in on Transaction Territory, that nebulous landscape where the analyst is mostly oracular and the oracle is, in fact, analytical (though that is a curious and telling reversal). You dont need me or anyone else to tell you how strange the Kevin Millwood for Johnny Estrada trade was. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding it, whats done is done and the Phillies have themselves a new ace. But is that necessarily the case? Millwood has had two fine seasons (1999 and 2002), but has been less than stellar in his other three. Yes, he was injured in 2001, and we should always keep a players upside in mind when trying to predict how hell do in the future, but are there some other patterns in Millwoods career performance that might mitigate the type of glowing projections for 2003 that hes been receiving? [Just to reference two of these that happen to be handy: the Fantasy Baseball Index ranks Millwood as their #5 starter in the NL, projecting that in 2003 hell turn in essentially the same season he had in 2002 (18-8, 3.21 ERA). Extractions: As the staff ace, Bowa thought that it would be better to keep Millwood on his every-five-days schedule. The younger pitchers would be better able to adjust to a disruption in their routines, surmised the manager, and an added advantage was that Millwood would get another start at home before the team left for the West Coast trip.

Extractions: In 1998 and '99, Millwood looked like the latest superstar pitcher to emerge from the Atlanta Braves ' vaunted minor-league system. Over those two seasons, he posted 36 wins against just 15 losses with a 3.61 ERA, finishing third in Cy Young Award voting in 1999. Millwood relied on a mid-90s fastball, hard slider and changeup. But in 2000 season his setup pitches the changeup and breaking ball deserted him. That season, his ERA skyrocketed to 4.66. To make matters worse, he was hampered by shoulder pain in 2001 that kept him from getting any velocity on his fastball.
