Extractions: Curtis Pride Deaf Baseball player Curtis is currently the only professional (Major League) baseball player who is Deaf. He's not the first Deaf pro player, that'd be William "Dummy" Hoy, who, if you didn't already know this, is the reason for hand signals in baseball. Since Dummy Hoy couldn't hear the umpire, they started using hand signals which in turn helped out the other players out of earshot, and the fans in the stands...little history for yano charge. Right now there's a big push to get Mr. Hoy into the Baseball Hall of Famehope he makes it. Wait a minute this is supposed to be about Curtis. Curtis is an incredibly genuine young man who can run faster than a Ferrari. I met him when he came to NTID to make a motivational presentation to our studentshe was cool. Extractions: I t's been cold for too long. The snow is supposed to start flying again today. So let's think some warm, happy thoughts. How about baseball. Spring training gets underway in just 21/2 weeks. That means it's gotta warm up soon. Baseball came to the forefront last week when it was announced that Hancock County native Houcktown to be exact William Ellsworth "Dummy" Hoy will be inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame on August 3. Even though Hoy, who was given his nickname because he was deaf, was mentioned in the headline and the lead of the story, it would have been easy to overlook him since most of the story was written about George Foster. Hoy had two paragraphs at the end. Hoy, who played for the Reds from 1894-97 and again in 1902, is very deserving. He was inducted into the Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame on Aug. 13, 1992. But there is a group the Hoy Committee that is wanting more. The Hoy Committee has been pushing for Hoy to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. Hoy has the numbers, but has been always overlooked to this point by the Veteran's Committee, which would have to elect him to the hall.

Extractions: CINCINNATI Houcktown native William Ellsworth "Dummy" Hoy was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in ceremonies prior to Sunday night's game against San Francisco. Hoy was inducted into the hall along with George Foster. Foster was a key cog in the Big Red Machine during the mid-1970s, but Hoy's accomplishments are just as impressive. Hoy, a member of the Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame, played for the Reds from 1894-97 and again in 1902, his final season of Major League Baseball. During his 14-year career, he hit .288, including over .300 three times. He had 2,054 hits, scored 1,426 runs including 100 or more nine times stole 597 bases, walked 1,004 times and struck out just 210 times. But most impressive was his defensive play. During those 14 years, he had an amazing 318 outfield assists.

Extractions: The late Stephen Jay Gould was a popular science essay writer and a paleontologist. He was also a big time baseball fan, an informed and lifelong follower of the New York Yankees. In "Triumph and Tragedy in Mudville" (Norton, $24.95, 342 pages), the winner of the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, writes insightfully and eloquently about the national pastime. It was Gould's friend Stephen King who encouraged this very worthy effort. We are fortunate to have it. All kinds of moving, interesting and sometimes arcane subject matter abound. Gould offers up an essay and an argument on deaf outfielder William Ellsworth "Dummy" Hoy (lifetime .288 average)who he believed belongs in the Hall of Fame. There is also a piece on Dusty Rhodes, a utility outfielder par excellence with the old New York Giants fans. He was the hero of the 1954 World Series. "Triumph and Tragedy in Mudville" is a keeper. "Jack Buck Forever A Winner" (SportspublishingLLC, $24.95, 144 pages), is a loving tribute to the Hall of Fame broadcaster who was on the scene for five decades as the Voice of the St. Louis Cardinals . The book is especially recommended for Redbird fans. It has perceptions and reflections from such as Red Schoendienst, Whitey Herzog, comedian Jonathan Winters and a special intro by cardinal manager Tony LaRussa. It is beautifully produced with color and black and white photos throughout, and over-sized.
