Hinch Says No To The Pros in school history and the pitching of Kyle Petersonnamed baseball America s Freshman For the 199596 season, that person again will be aj hinch, who spurned http://www.paloaltoonline.com/weekly/morgue/sports/1995_Jun_23.HINCH.html
Extractions: Publication Date: Friday Jun 23, 1995 Stanford All-America catcher will return, wants shot at '96 Olympics by Keith Peters Stanford baseball fans have a lot to look forward to next season, including night games at Sunken Diamond for the first time in school history and the pitching of Kyle Petersonnamed Baseball America's Freshman of the Year on Wednesday. Equally important to those diamond denizens will be the guy in the mask behind the plate. For the 1995-96 season, that person again will be A.J. Hinch, who spurned pro offers from the Minnesota Twins this weekdeciding instead to return to Stanford for his senior year. "It was a difficult decision, because I've wanted to play pro baseball all my life," Hinch said Wednesday from Millington, Tenn., were he is training with the USA Baseball National Team. "But, for myself, getting my degree (on time) and having a chance to play in the Olympics simply outweigh pro baseball at this moment. "How many guys in a lifetime get a chance to play on the U.S. National Team four years and play in the Olympics, and perhaps win a gold medal? It was too much to pass up." Hinch told Stanford head coach Mark Marquess of his decision Monday.
Hinch Catches On To Success by Jim S. Harrington. At the start of this season, sophomore aj hinch was rated as the secondbest catcher in the nation by baseball America magazine. http://www.paloaltoonline.com/weekly/morgue/sports/1994_May_6.NEWHINCH.html
Extractions: @credit:Joe Melena Publication Date: Friday May 6, 1994 Sophomore catcher rates among the best in school history by Jim S. Harrington At the start of this season, sophomore A.J. Hinch was rated as the second-best catcher in the nation by Baseball America magazine. Heading into this weekend's home series with UCLA, one question seems relevant: Was this ranking too low? Hinch's capable offensive production and defensive abilities behind the backstop have been a major reason for the No. 13-ranked Cardinal's success this year in the Pacific-10 Conference Southern Division, where Stanford (17-7 and 31-20) holds a half-game lead over USC and Arizona State entering today's 2:30 p.m. game against UCLA at Sunken Diamond. Stanford coach Mark Marquess, who has had more than his share of quality starters behind the plateincluding 1988 Olympic gold medalist Doug Robbinsrates Hinch as one of the very best to come through his program. "He compares favorably to the best we have had," said Marquess. "And we've had some good catchers." Like All-Americans Jack Shepard (1953), Ralph Holding (1958) and Jim Hibbs (1966). Surprisingly, a Cardinal catcher hasn't been honored since Hibbs. But give Hinch time.

The winner? The Tampa Bay Devil Rays - They get a great young OF in Ben Grieve for an almost 37 year old closer in Roberto Hernandez. Hernandez goes to the Royals in addition to AJ Hinch from the A's, for free agent to be Johnny Damon. Damon goes to the A's. The big loser in the deal? The Kansas City Royals. What good does an aging closer do them if they aren't going to win any games? They give up their best hitter (In fact, one of the best hitters in the league last year), as well as a group of PTBNL's and minor leaguers, in what looks to be a panic move. The rumors floating around in past weeks about who they were talking about getting for Damon far exceeded the actual payoff. The A's also come out on the losing side. Granted, they get something for AJ Hinch when they would have had to release him anyway to make room for Mark Guthrie, but they can't afford to sign Damon long term, so they are basically renting him for one season at the cost of Ben Grieve. They also give up an above average 20-year old SS prospect in Angel Berroa for one not as promising in Mark Ells.
