Baseball Digest: Baseball Rules Corner - Brief Article out that first base umpire Jim Wolf called time because a baseball had come Asleft fielder mike greenwell caught the ball for what should have been a game http://articles.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FCI/is_1_60/ai_67831641
Extractions: When an umpire calls `time' strange things can happen ALTHOUGH THE PLATE UMPIRE IS the primary focus of attention during a ballgame, the field umpires are empowered with a great deal of authority, including file right to call "time" when necessary per rule 9.04(b). This has created an abundance of interesting and sometimes bizarre situations. On July 14, the Mariners met the Padres in an interleague game in San Diego where the Mariners' John Olerud was the victim, then the beneficiary of 9.04(b). Here is what happened. With runners on first and second and one out in the sixth inning and the Mariners trailing, 2-1, Olerud doubled to left. But it turned out that first base umpire Jim Wolf called "time" because a baseball had come out into fair territory in right field near Seattle's bullpen even though no relievers were warming up at the time. Mariners skipper Lou Piniella stormed out of the dugout and angrily argued, but got nowhere as he stalked from ump to ump, his cap in hand. The run was erased and the runners returned to first and second, and Olerud got his bat and went back to the plate. On a 1-0 pitch from Brian Meadows, the Mariners' first baseman drove the ball into the right field seats giving Seattle a 4-2 lead.

Extractions: Main November 04, 2003 3 (Million) Martinez Lunch Edgar Martinez signed a one-year deal to stay with the Seattle Mariners today. He'll earn a minimum of three million dollars. The two-time AL batting champion had a $4 million base salary this year and earned $3.5 million in performance bonuses. He faced a Sunday deadline to file for free agency. But Martinez wants to finish his career with the Mariners, the only organization he's played for. "I'm very glad everything worked out and I'm coming back for another year," he said. "I think if we didn't reach an agreement, the chances that I'd stay home were a lot greater than I'd play for another team." I used to hear a lot about how players don't stay with one team anymore, but it seems a lot of recent stars had their careers in one city. Here's the list of all players who played at least 12 seasons and played for only one major league franchise: The number of players with one team did go down from the 1970's to the 1980's, and you have to figure in a couple of expansions. But it's not as bad as some people would have you believe. And it looks like Edgar Martinez will be another on the retired part of this list eventually.
