Baseball NEW YORK Barry Bonds' lawyer believes the federal government is singling out the San Francisco Giants slugger in the Bay Area steroids scandal. ADVERTISEMENT Michael Rains told The New York Times that the federal government appears intent on trying to set a perjury trap for Bonds. "I think they're trying to make an example out of him," Rains was quoted as saying by The Times. Efforts by The Associated Press to contact Rains at his office Sunday were unsuccessful. Bonds' personal trainer, Greg Anderson, was among four men indicted last month on charges of illegally supplying performance-enhancing drugs from the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative. All four pleaded innocent. Bonds has denied that he used steroids, an assertion his lawyer made again to The Times. The San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday that urine samples given last season by seven major league baseball players for testing were being sought by a federal grand jury examining the BALCO case. Previously, the paper reported, it was not known whether actual samples, or the written results, remained from last season's tests.

Baseball SAN FRANCISCO The samples from drug tests taken last year by Barry Bonds and six other baseball players have not been destroyed and can be retested to determine if the players used a designer drug at the center of an alleged steroid-distribution ring, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. ADVERTISEMENT The seven players in question testified before a grand jury last year and investigators had been seeking the results from the drug tests. It was believed that only written reports existed, but the newspaper reported on its Web site Friday night that four sources with knowledge of the subpoena process said the actual urine samples remained and could be retested. That would allow investigators to determine whether the players used THG, which was allegedly given to athletes by the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative. Bonds' personal trainer, Greg Anderson, was among four men indicted last month on charges of illegally supplying performance-enhancing drugs from BALCO. All four pleaded innocent. "I don't have any concerns that this would be legally significant to Barry," Bonds' attorney, Michael Rains, told The Chronicle.

Extractions: With that in mind, and with the understanding that major league baseball players can be very superstitious, King and As equipment manager Steve Vucinich shared some of their favorite stories. When Vida Blue first joined the Oakland As in 1969, he wore number 21, then changed to 35. But after his Cy Young award-winning season in 1971, Blue changed to 14, because he always considered himself a quarterback, says Vucinich. Blue, in fact, had many scholarship offers after being a high school quarterback sensation in Monroe, Louisiana. When pitcher Don Sutton signed with the As in 1985 following a Hall of Fame career with the Dodgers, he wanted uniform number 20, which he had been wearing his entire career. But catcher Bruce Bochte already had the number. Sutton ended up buying Bochte a new set of golf clubs in a trade for the number. Jason and Jeremy Giambi had heard so much glory about Yankee legend Mickey Mantle from their father that they both wanted to wear his famous number 7 when they reached the major leagues. When Jason arrived with the As, the number was already taken, so he settled for 16 (the two numbers add up to 7). By the time Jeremy signed with the As, number 7 was available and Jeremy wore it. Then when Jason Giambi signed with the Yankees, number 16 was already taken and number 7 (Mantles old uniform number) was retired. So he settled for 25 (again, the numbers add up to 7).

Extractions: Main May 23, 2002 Giambi Trade: I've been busy at a conference the last few days, but I was shocked tonight when I saw on the ESPN bottom line that Jeremy Giambi had been traded for John Mabry. Clearly, this is salary dumping, and unlike last year, the A's look like they are giving up. That's real sad. I still think they have one of the best organizations in baseball. We'll see what happens, but I think there is going to be tension between Beane and ownership over this. Does Beane want to rebuild from scratch again? How fast can he do it? Or will he move on to greener pastures? Stay tuned. Posted by StatsGuru at 12:59 AM Baseball Navigation
