Mets manager Bobby Valentine joked the scouting report called for pitching Clemens inside. Piazza avoided the issue. The decision ultimately fell to Mets starter Shawn Estes. The 29-year-old pitcher found his own way to make the point. In the third inning when Clemens stepped in, Estes sailed the first pitch behind Clemens' knees. WHAT WE DON'T KNOW Which Elmer Deseens will show up? The D-backs hope the 2002 version, not last year's model. He did not pitch deep into games and compiled a 5.07 ERA in 2003and that won't cut it in a Curt Schilling-less rotation. LF Luis Gonzalez has a 50 percent tear in his elbow ligament. If the condition worsens, be will need season-ending surgery. The team cannot afford to lose his bat. The 2003 season was a frustrating one for RF Danny Bautista; he never got going at the plate. The team has limited options in the outfield so a productive Bautista is key. The loss of Schilling got a lot of publicity, but RHP Miguel Batista's departure must not be overlooked. He led the team in innings pitched and tied for the most wins. Someone must pick up those innings.
