He added, "Unless the political crisis is resolved soon, there is little chance the season will resume. The first round of the playoffs was scheduled to start Jan. 2. Officials say they could extend the season to mid-January or stage fewer playoff games with fewer eligible teams, but only if conditions improve." Among others, pitcher Francisco Rodriguez ("K-Rod" from the Angels) was supposed to play. Here are the details: Jorge's article Why should we care in America? It means that stars from the their winter league will have to wait another year to prove themselves to MLB scouts. In case you're not sure that it matters, here is an alphabetical list of star players who have come to the MLB from Venezuela in the past: Alfonso, Edgardo

Extractions: Eckersley overcame adversity to become one of baseball's greatest relief pitchers. He began his career as a starter, and it wasn't until he was 32 years old and playing for Tony LaRussa that he became a closer. He went on to save 320 games for the Oakland A's in nine seasons, helping the team to four division titles, three pennants, and a World Series title. Despite his late arrival in the bullpen, he retired as the #3 all-time saves leader.

Extractions: Headlines Opinions On Campus Sports :: April 6, 2004 Baseball sweeps UNF for second time this season by jason law Flagler baseball coach Dave Barnett said earlier in the season when his players produce at the plate, they win ballgames. Produce is exactly what the Saints did last Wednesday against the visiting University of North Florida in an 11-1 win. Flagler pounced on UNF early in the game, scoring eight runs on eight hits in the first inning. The Saints were fierce with the bat, knocking UNF's starter Ryan Amason out of the game after only 2/3 of an inning. Greg Alden, John Smith and Chris Gase each had three hits. Tommy Todd and Bo Diaz both went 2-4. Pitcher Mike Krebs did his part, going the distance to pick up the win and improve to 4-3. He went 8 innings, giving up 6 hits and striking out 10. The sweep of UNF marks the first time in 11 years that the Saints defeated the Ospreys in the season series. The Saints have had good luck against NCAA Division II opponents but have not been able to come together in Conference play. While Flagler has defeated UNF twice this year, the rest of the season has been a struggle. Conference teams that the Saints see more often have given them the most problems.

Join the Discussion "Rose's hit to break Cobb's all-time record happened on September 11, 1985. 9/11, of course, is now among the most doomed dates in U.S. history."Ab_Baseball After doing some research on Pete Rose and his record-breaking 4,192nd hit in 1985, I came to a strange realization. Rose collected his hit on September 11. Some of you may not like where I'm going with this, but please let me continue. Ease up on the urge to email me, blasting me for comparing baseball to America's most tragic terrorist attack. Not only would that comparison be ridiculous, it'd be callous. This column won't go down that road. However, it will discuss how the date 9/11, now associated with doom worldwide, has somewhat of a doomed history in major league baseball.
