He could have stomped into Terry Francona's office, told the Red Sox skipper a thing or two, then demanded to be traded. ADVERTISEMENT But Brian Daubach took a different tack when he learned he had been designated for assignment, the news coming one day after he was treated to a rousing ovation by the Fenway Faithful in the Sox' home opener April 9. Daubach took the high road to Pawtucket simply because he knew it was only route to take if he wanted to make his way back to Boston. Yesterday, Daubach found himself back in the bigs when the Sox placed Ellis Burks (arthroscopic knee surgery) on the 15-day disabled list Monday and recalled Daubach from Pawtucket, where the designated hitter/first baseman hit .350 in 10 games. "It's unfortunate that Ellis got hurt," said Daubach, as he stood in front of his locker in the Sox clubhouse, surrounded by reporters before last night's game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays was rained out. "But I'm just glad to be back. I'm just glad it worked out." While he did not have Daubach penciled on last night's lineup card, Francona expected Daubach to be in the lineup for tonight's game.
Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Red Sox May 11, 2004 Brian Daubach had the kind of game he needed last night. Only problem was, it was difficult for him to feel good about it because his team was beaten by the Cleveland Indians. ADVERTISEMENT Placed in the lineup because Manny Ramirez was busy in Florida becoming a United States citizen, Daubach made his first start in left field this season and made the most of it. He threw out a runner at second base, and hit a solo home run and a two-run double in the Red Sox' 10-6 loss at Fenway Park. Does Ramirez have to worry about winning his job back? "I don't think so," said Daubach. In the first inning, Daubach ended the Indians' initial rally when he played Travis Hafner's Wall ball cleanly and threw out Hafner trying to stretch the single into a double. "When was the last time I threw out a runner?" Daubach said. "I don't know." According to the Red Sox media guide, he did not throw out a runner from the outfield last year with the White Sox. He's done it only three times in his career, all during the 2002 season with the Red Sox. Daubach was upset that he didn't get Victor Martinez, who batted right before Hafner and stretched a Wall ball into a double. "I made a bad throw," he said.

Extractions: As a frequent and serious minor league fan, on this blog you will often read me writing in favor of giving some of the talent I've seen a shot at The Show. In this case, I am hoping the Sox will give a serious look at Andy Abad as a backup at first behind Millar, instead of the recently re-signed, fan favorite Brian Daubach. Yes, Brian is a solid first base defensive choice, and, has some pop in his bat. But, Brian is very, very streaky - and when he is cold, well, for me anyway it is torture to watch him reaching for low and away stuff for his third strike.

Bambino's reader and frequent commenter Deane Crilley joins the blogosphere with his own Red Sox blog: Buckner Was Framed Homework question: What is the difference between a bog and a fen? *link to comment As they say, time flies when you're having fun: It was 4 years ago on our about New Years Day that I scratched down my original spec notes "to create a Red Sox weblog." Makes perfect sense, too, that the idea to start a blog came during this time of year, winter, when the approach of Spring and baseball holds every dream and hope of good things to come. Next year is this year? I don't see any reason why not. As Giamatti might say: Whenever the game is played, our most noble hopes are revived.
