Extractions: CHICAGO CUBS: A few days after deciding not to offer SS Ricky Gutierrez salary arbitration, the Cubs traded for the Blue Jays' Alex Gonzalez. As dependable as Gutierrez was for two seasons, the Cubs feel they have an upgrade in Gonzalez, who batted .253 with 17 homers and 76 RBIs this year. Gutierrez had a better average but less power. The Cubs also like Gonzalez's range and throwing arm. Strikeouts and a low on-base percentage are problems. He struck out 149 times in 636 at-bats last season and had an OBP of .303. The Cubs feel batting coach Jeff Pentland and manager Don Baylor can get Gonzalez to use the whole field and still maintain some power.... Management is entertaining the idea of signing free-agent OF Moises Alou to replace departed OF Rondell White, but G.M. Andy MacPhail may have to bend his budget to afford Alou. Bruce Miles CINCINNATI REDS: The Reds weakened themselves at three positions when they traded OF/IF Dmitri Young to the Tigers for OF Juan Encarnacion and RHP Luis Pineda, but they felt they had no choice. Young was headed for an arbitration award the Reds wouldn't be able to afford, and because he was likely to leave after 2002 as a free agent, they wanted to get something for him. Losing Young, a switch hitter, costs the Reds depth at third and first base and leaves manager Bob Boone with fewer lineup options. Encarnacion, 25, has five-tool potential, which he flashed in 2000 before slipping in 2001. He also has a reputation as a player who is difficult to coach, shows little patience and discipline at the plate and has lapses of concentration on defense. Pineda, 23, could land a job in the Reds' bullpen. He can reach 98 mph with his four-seam fastball, which has a late break. Mark Schmetzer

Extractions: Edition#10 (May 1, 2001) View From The Bleachers is a weekly column written by diehard Trapper fan, Wayde Parchoc. Each Tuesday during the season he will provide us with his thoughts on the Trappers, the PCL, the Twins and baseball in general. This week Wayde takes a look at the South Division of the Pacific Coast League. PCL: THE SOUTH DIVISION This week we continue the divisional previews with a look at the South Division. Last year the Sacramento River Cats won the division by a whopping 17 games and recorded the best record in the PCL. This year they look to have another quality squad and should be the team to beat in the South again. It's the Fresno Grizzlies, Las Vegas 51's, and Tucson Sidewinders that will challenge Sacramento. SACRAMENTO RIVER CATS Affiliation: Oakland A's. Last year: 89-53, first in the South Division. The last few years, Oakland has fielded quality clubs in the PCL. They've provided Edmonton and Vancouver with championship teams, and now Sacramento is getting good clubs. Oakland has developed several quality major leaguers and there always seems to be more good prospects on the way. They're one of the best teams in the majors when it comes to prospect depth. This year Sacramento has a lot of new players playing their first year at Triple-A. The offense has good depth but the pitching doesn't look as strong so perhaps the Cats are beatable this year.
