He hits for power. He drives in runs. He's got an arm like a cannon. He's a team leader. And he's a class act in a game that currently doesn't have many. Give me some peanuts and crackerjacks.

The players are ranked by position, so first basemen are not compared to second basemen, etc. The players are then broken down into Type A, Type B and Type C (and the rest). When a team loses a free agent who is ranked in one of the three categories, they receive compensation as follows (if and only if they offered that player arbitration before he signed with his new team): If a team doesn't offer arbitration to their free agent, they get nothing when he signs with another team. This brings up the next question of why don't the teams always offer arbitration? The answer is, they might simply be afraid he'll accept it. It's a gamble some teams aren't willing to take, even if it seems likely the player is heading out of town. Teams must offer arbitration by Dec. 7.

His home run broke a scoreless tie, gave Pedro the victory and punctuated a series triumph at Yankee Stadium. Fans love him; friends of mine want me to eat crow for suggesting a year ago that Trot would never even be a league-average right fielder. But is Trot Nixon overrated? Don't get me wrong, I ask the question not out of spite. I actually do want to be wrong about Trot, as much as I want a certain magazine's World Series prediction to be correct. The problem with following baseball too long is that the limitations of one's own favorite teams become all too clear. As if to answer my question, a certain other web site provides convenient links to player stats by league and position. Without further ado, here's a table of regular American League right fielders and their 2000 performance through the end of May:

Extractions: SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER COLUMNIST Cold weather. Hot weather. Rain or sun. Roof open or roof closed. Doesn't matter. "I'm playing, regardless," Jay Buhner said yesterday with a cat-ate-the-bird grin creeping out from somewhere in the middle of that famous Buhner goatee. As if they were going to be able to keep him off the field. As if there was any chance the Mariners right fielder was going to stay off the grass. On the eve of a historic Seattle sporting moment, after two months on the disabled list with a strained hamstring, Buhner's marvelous recovery comes just in the nick of time. This week, in the wake of an on-field brawl that left Mariners outfielders Charles Gipson and Brian Hunter injured and on the disabled list, Buhner submitted to two rounds of hail-Mary acupuncture sessions and says he's fine. Not 100 percent, but fine. "I've got the green light," he said. "I know it would have been crazy to rush back just to play, but I would have done it anyway." As if there were any chance he was going to say anything else.

Extractions: Tuesday, February 24, 2004 M's add Buhner to team's Hall of Fame SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF Former right fielder Jay Buhner has been selected for induction into the Mariners Baseball Hall of Fame, the team announced today. Buhner is the third member of the club's Hall of Fame, joining former first baseman Alvin Davis, inducted in 1997, and broadcaster Dave Niehaus, who was inducted in 2000. The Hall of Fame was created to honor the players, staff and other individuals that greatly contributed to the history of the Mariners franchise. Buhner joined the Mariners in 1988, coming from the New York Yankees in a trade for first baseman Ken Phelps. He belted 310 home runs with 965 runs batted in during his Major League career. From 1996-98 he became just the 10th player to hit 40 or more home runs in three consecutive seasons (since then nine other players have done so). He ranks among Mariners career leaders in games (1,440; third place), at-bats (4,922; third place), runs (790; third place), hits (1,255; third place), doubles (231; third place), triples (19; tied for seventh), home runs (307; second place), RBI (951; third place), total bases (2,445; third place), extra-base hits (557; third place), slugging percentage (.497, fifth) and walks (788; second).

"I put it in fourth gear," Jay Buhner said, "and haul ass." He has 20 acres of lawn and 60 acres of pasture, and it takes him four full days to mow it. The field mice he leaves in his wake supply a feast for the bald eagle and redtail hawk that nest nearby. "They come diving down behind me," he said.
