Extractions: Hall of Fame induction 1970 232/300 ballots cast (77.33%) Son of a semi-pro ball player, Lou Boudreau was one of the best shortstops ever to grace a baseball diamond. Known for smart play and ability more than agility, Boudreau led AL shortstops in fielding percentage 8 times during his career, including his first full season, 1940, and also 1941-1944, 1946-1948. A seven-time All-Star (1940-1944, 1947-1948), his career fielding percentage was .973, at the time a record for major league shortstops. Aside from his excellent fielding, Boudreau was also an excellent hitter, leading the league in 1944 when he batted .327, and leading the league with 45 doubles in 1941 while also knocking 8 triples and 10 home runs. Incidentally he had also batted 46 doubles in 1940. He ranks 7th all-time in career batting average and on-base percentage for shortstops, and ranks 8th in slugging percentage. Boudreaus' first major league appearance came in 1938 when he appeared once as a pinch-hitter, and he was called-up permanently in 1939. During his third full season, at age 24, Boudreau was named player-manager of the Cleveland Indians which made him the youngest start-of-season manager in baseball history. It was Boudreau who later oversaw Bob Lemons' transition from an outfielder to a pitcher.

Lou Boudreau -- HOFer Who Was Player And Manager lou boudreau was a doublethreat in baseball. Not only was he a sharp shortstop withoutstanding hitting ability, but he could also work as the team s manager. http://www.historicbaseball.com/players/b/boudreau_lou.html
Extractions: Ht: Wt B: T: R Yrs G AB R H HR RBI SB BA As a college athlete, Lou Boudreau seemed to have several options after his graduation. However, the captain of the basketball and baseball teams at the University of Illinois signed a deal to join the Cleveland Indians following his graduation. Big 10 officials heard about his agreement and ruled that Boudreau was ineligible to compete as an amateur in college. So, Boudreau appeared as a pinch hitter in one game with the Indians during the 1938 season. He also played professional basketball with Hammond, Indiana's entry into the National Basketball League. At the beginning of the 1939 season, Boudreau found himself with the Buffalo Bisons of the International League. Boudreau had played third base or caught during his college career, but Buffalo manager Steve O'Neill moved Boudreau to shortstop and teamed him up with second baseman Ray Mack. The two worked together beautifully and both were called up to Cleveland in the second half of the seasons. In his first full season with the Indians in 1940, Boudreau hit .295 and drove in 100 runs. His performance earned him a spot in the 1940 All-Star game. In the 1942 season, Boudreau, just 24, was named player-manager of the team. It made him the youngest individual ever to manage a Major League team from the beginning of a season.
