Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER PHOENIX - Cliff Floyd took a step toward returning to the Mets, going 0-for-3 and playing left field in an extended spring training game yesterday, his first game action since landing on the disabled list with a strained right quadriceps. Floyd will be reevaluated today, but soon may be ready to start a rehab assignment that likely would begin with Single-A St. Lucie. He landed on the DL on April 12. It appeared he would return after the 15-day period, but a hip flexor problem surfaced during his recovery. Also on the injury front, Jose Reyes (hamstring) hit off a tee and played catch. Scott Erick son (hamstring) continues to get treatment, but has yet to return to the mound after aborting a rehab assignment when he tweaked the muscle. MOVING DOWN: Kazuo Matsui returned to the starting lineup last night against the Diamondbacks, but he didn't return to the leadoff position. Art Howe used Eric Valent in that role for a second straight day, after Valent went 1-for-4 with two walks Sunday against the Brewers. Howe figured Matsui would benefit from having a hole on the right side of the infield if Valent got on base and Arizona first baseman Shea Hillenbrand was forced to hold him on. The manager said it would only be a short-term switch for Matsui, because Valent figures to return to the bench when

Extractions: Jay Stuart Bell (b. December 11 in Eglin AFB, Florida ) is a Major League Baseball shortstop second baseman and right-handed batter who played for the Cleveland Indians Pittsburgh Pirates Kansas City Royals Arizona Diamondbacks (1998-2002) and New York Mets Bell maintained his reputation as one of the best shortstops in the 1990s. His range was only average but he had a great knowledge of the hitters and positioned himself well. Originally a first-round pick of the Minnesota Twins in , Bell made 129 errors over his first three minor-league seasons. The following year he was traded to the Indians in a deal that brought starter Bert Blyleven to Minnesota, and when he finally reached the majors in 1986 he faced Blyleven in his first major-league at-bat. Bell promptly ripped the first pitch he saw for a home run , the 50th allowed by Blyleven in the season: a MLB record that's still intact. Though mostly a singles and doubles hitter at first, Bell was also an expert at bunting. Bell did show early signs of his power potential hitting 21 home runs in 1997 and 20 in 1998. A trial switch to second base at end of the '98 season became a permanent move the next spring. Bell belted 36 of his 38 homers from his new position, a total exceeded only by Rogers Hornsby Davey Johnson and Ryne Sandberg among second basemen. One of those round-trippers, was a sixth-inning

Flushing Local: Cirillo: A Little Bit Better Jay Bell December 17, 2003. Cirillo a Little Bit Better jay bell. But if he is pluggedinto the jay bell role, then we ve definitely made an upgrade. http://www.flushinglocal.com/moveabletype/archives/000034.html
Extractions: Daily Dish on the State and Fate of the Formerly Amazin' New York Mets Back to Main Page Via Always Amazin' , the Daily News says Cedeno for Cirillo is a done deal OK. I am going to be very, very charitable to Duquette in my critique of this trade. Cirillo fits way better on the Mets roster than Cedeno. Cirillo is a ten-year veteran who has played every infield position. His career OBP is 369. He is still considered a very good fielding thirdbaseman. He was awful at the plate for Seattle last year, but looks like one of those righthanded Mariners who just can't hit at Safeco. Here are his home/road splits the last three years: 2003 Safeco 179/229/220 Road 230/329/319 2001 Coors 362/404/571 Road 266/327/383 Cirillo's road OBP last year was almost as good as Cedeno's (333). And we had Cedeno batting first almost all year. Think about that for a minute. Also, Cirillo's road stats in 2002 compare favorably with Wigginton's 2003 totals. Cirillo might benefit as a hitter from the scenery change. It's just as likely that at 34, he's started a hopeless decline, though. I guess we'll find out.
