Extractions: It should have been the biggest story in sports. The Seattle Pilots won a baseball game last weekend. It was their first win in 30 years, eight months and nine days. And even the Los Angeles Clippers would call that a serious drought. OK, so it wasn't really the Seattle Pilots who beat the Twins 5-3 in the Metrodome last Saturday. It was really their descendants, those sneaky Milwaukee Brewers, wearing the uniforms of the '69 Pilots on a very special Turn Back the Clock Night. Triviality Only two players have had at least 35 homers and 100 RBI in every season since the strike (i.e, 1995-99). Name them. (Answer at bottom) But it was still the first time any team wearing the uniform of the legendary Pilots had won a game since Oct. 1, 1969. And that was so long ago, the starting pitcher against them that day was Rollie Fingers. So this latest triumph was still a major event to us history majors back here in the next millennium.

Extractions: I read somewhere that the famed 1975 World Series Game 6 between Cincinnati and Boston is considered by many to be "the greatest major league game ever played." Along with Don Larsen's perfect World Series game in 1956, what other three or four games fit into the category of "greatest games ever played"? Ted Holland Cornelius, N.C. Any answer to your question has to be subjective, but we will give you five additional selections as follows: * Game 7 of the 1960 World Series in which the favored Yankees lost to the Pirates, 10-9, on Bill Mazeroski's ninth inning home run. * Game 7 of the 1991 World Series, won, 1-0, by Jack Morris of the Twins over the Braves in ten innings.

Extractions: Hardball at its finest Pieces of the Past column by Jim Reis The traditionof baseball runs strong in Northern Kentucky with the old professional Covington Blue Sox, the Newport Brewers and many semi-pro teams. Often overlooked are the teams from Ludlow. Over the years Ludlow's baseball teams - such as the Ludlow White Sox, the Ludlow Giants and the Ludlow American Legion - would compete annually for local and regional league championships. In fact, in 1875 one Ludlow team played a two-game series against the Cincinnati Reds and a game against the Boston Red Sox. By most accounts, the first baseball team organized in Ludlow was in 1874. The baseball club awarded a contract to Cuthbert and Co. to grade a ball field. The old ball field occupied the site where Caple Park is now located. The ball field, with its ''fine view of the Ohio River,'' was to be ready for use in May 1875. The Ludlow team took on all challengers and traveled, playing in Louisville in May 1875 and throughout Cincinnati.

Extractions: Wednesday's Child Email This Story Print This Story Cornelius, 13, loves all kinds of outdoor sports, especially baseball, football and soccer. He also enjoys the outdoors, hot dogs and hip-hop music. Recently, he had the chance to go behind the scenes at Comiskey Park. There, he met some of the White Sox players who bring such summer excitement to Chicago's south side. When his feet hit the field for the first time, this 13-year-old beamed and he thought Comiskey Park was a slice of heaven. Standing on the field, he was asked what was going through his mind. Cornelius responded, "Being a famous star." After checking everything out including the infield grass, he headed to the dugout and a special surprise: a tour by Sox shortstop Royce Clayton. Clayton had some special Sox memorabilia for Cornelius and plenty of great stories about playing ball in the major leagues.

Before we dive into our Super Bowl preview, we must address some other sports topics. ... Although it was a senseless act of violence, the manner in which the Nancy Kerrigan case was handled was a little extraordinary - to say the least. Assigning the FBI and a special unit from the Detroit Metro Police to investigate the goings-on of a woman getting whacked on the leg with a rod is a bit ridiculous. The Motor City is not known as the safest city in the hemisphere, so itÕs not like DetroitÕs finest had time to spare. Likewise, the Feds should have something better to do than to track down NancyÕs attacker (she wasnÕt even left in the hospital overnight, by the way). As soon as other crimes are solved in such a swift manner, then can our tax dollars go to solving such relatively trivial cases. Unless, of course, the FBI wants to investigate and solve the mystery of why our damn furnace wonÕt work for more than two hours in a row. ...
