Extractions: Baseball Cards, 1887-1914 Cornelius Alexander McGillicuddy, known as Connie Mack, the "Tall Tactician" of major league baseball, was born on December 22 , 1862 in East Brookfield, Massachusetts. Ramrod-straight and a string bean of a man at 6'1" and 150 pounds, Mack was a professional baseball player prior to serving as manager and team executive for 53 years. Fifty of those years, from 1901 through the 1950 season, were spent as owner-manager of the Philadelphia Athletics . The A's won nine American League championships and five World Series under the management of this beloved and respected baseball legend. In 1937, Mack was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame Mack played professional ball, mostly as a catcher, in more than 700 major league games. The story goes that he shortened his name to Mack so that it would fit on the score board. In 1901, he became manager and owner of a 25 percent stake in the Philadelphia club, which he named the Athletics after the old American Association team of the 1880s. Mack was easy to spot on the benchhe was the man in the business suit (as seen in the panoramic team photograph displayed below). Mr. Mack, as he was respectfully referred to, never wore a uniform and rarely went into the clubhouse except for a pre-game meeting, a practice he initiated in the major leagues. His habit of moving his players into proper fielding position by waving his scorecard earned him the title "tenth man on the field."

Philadelphia Commerical Museum Collection Several of the most important legal documents in the early history of modern major league baseball were created during a protracted legal battle that resulted from Napoleon Lajoie jumping his contract with the National League's Philadelphia Phillies in order to play for the upstart American League Philadelphia Athletics. This gave the Athletics instant credibility as a major league team, and helped to create great animosity between the two leagues. The Lajoie case is still cited as being relevant in sports law today. In early 1901, the owner of the Philadelphia Phillies, Colonel John L. Rogers, filed suit in state court to try to regain Lajoie's services. Rogers and his team, the Philadelphia Ball Club, Limited, were the plaintiffs vs. Napoleon Lajoie, Benjamin F. Shibe, President, Cornelius Magillicuddy (Connie Mack), Manager and Treasurer of the Philadelphia American League Base Ball Club, and Frank Hough, Agent were the defendants. Common Pleas Court No. 5 rejected the Philadelphia Phillies request for an injunction against Lajoie and the American League on May 17, 1901. The Phillies promptly appealed this decision.

Extractions: Players of the Three-I League by Bill Steinbacher-Kemp Neal "Mickey" Finn (Bloomington, 1923): Nineteen-year-old Cornelius Francis Finn spent his first season of professional baseball in the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League. After five seasons in the Pacific Coast League, he broke into the majors as a utility infielder with Brooklyn. Tragically, the 29-year old second baseman died during the 1933 season due to complications from a stomach ailment. Born and raised in New York City, Finn drew praise for his ball playing while still at St. Ignatius Loyola elementary school in Manhattan. He then played in the city's Catholic league, though it's doubtful he finished high school. At age 19, he appeared in 112 games for the Bloomington Bloomers of the Three Eye. He finished the 1923 season with 94 hits and 2 home runs in 366 at-bats (for a .257 batting average). He also scored 40 runs and stole 7 bases for the fourth-place Bloomers. Future St. Louis Browns standout George Blaeholder also played for the Bloomers in 1923, splitting the season between Terre Haute and Bloomington. That year, the Decatur Commies (81-54) bested the Rockford Rox(76-63) for the league pennant. Finn spent 1924 in Wilkes-Barre of the Class D New York-Pennsylvania League, batting a

Central led East Rowan 5-4 in the South Piedmont Conference Tournament championship game in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs and one on, Viking lefty Thomas Wilson hung a curveball to Drew Davis the only bad pitch he threw in three innings of work. The sound generated by the collision of Davis arcing bat with that floating baseball was a Fourth-of-July level explosion. Wilson grimaced. Davis smiled. The East dugout rose as one, arms lifted in triumph. East fans, lurching forward from bleacher seats and lawn chairs, whooped. Central coach Bryan Tyson buried his head in his hands. I didnt even get up off my stool, said Tyson. Davis hit it a mile. I knew it was out.

The Mustangs fell 4-3 to ancient nemesis South Point in the first round of the state 3A playoffs on Tuesday night at Staton Field, stranding eight baserunners, missing a game-winning homer by a handful of feet and leaving hundreds of forlorn fans with misty eyes. This game was a reflection of our whole season, said East right fielder Nick Lefko, who launched that last-ditch drive that nearly salvaged the evening. We just didnt get two-out hits. The opportunities were there tonight like they were all year, agreed East coach Jeff Safrit, whos 10th straight sojourn to the playoffs screeched to an abrupt halt. We were in every game. It always came down to one play or one hit. Its tough. When your season ends with a one-run loss, youd just as soon get beat 10-nothing. It was a year in which East (17-9) usually lived on the edge and sometimes slipped off the ledge. Tuesday nights defeat was the Mustangs sixth by a single run. There were two two-run losses. The Mustangs most-lopsided setback all season was 3-0 to Jared Barnette at West Rowan.
