BASEBALL'S FORGOTTEN MAN, Continued! If you play enough baseball, you know what you can and can t do. . A few words aboutharold baines harold and I are a lot alike. (Yesthey re both very quiet http://www.angelfire.com/mi/BirdWatcher/QuotesII.html
Extractions: This page is under sporadic construction as I attempt to dig up a ton of really good quotes. Bear with the confusion.... On staying mellow even under incredible pressure: "I have the ability to say, 'Whatever.'" "Just because you're slow doesn't mean you can't run the bases. If you play enough baseball, you know what you can and can't do." An alternate career choice: "I would like to be a Goodyear blimp pilot. Blimps are kind of fascinating to me. I grew up in California where the blimp would land pretty often. That's what I would have been, if you can believe that. It's better than saying a plumber, right? That's what I've always wanted to be. I got to go up in one so that was pretty cool." (Borrowed from AthleteDirect.com.) Defending his "unearned" rep as the clubhouse prankster: "There are a lot of guys who do that stuff. It's just that I get blamed for everything." (Reminds me of an interview with AM-1000's Steve Cochran where he said "I just tell 'em (players that actually cause mischief) what to do." Also borrowed from AthleteDirect.com.)

The players are ranked by position, so first basemen are not compared to second basemen, etc. The players are then broken down into Type A, Type B and Type C (and the rest). When a team loses a free agent who is ranked in one of the three categories, they receive compensation as follows (if and only if they offered that player arbitration before he signed with his new team): If a team doesn't offer arbitration to their free agent, they get nothing when he signs with another team. This brings up the next question of why don't the teams always offer arbitration? The answer is, they might simply be afraid he'll accept it. It's a gamble some teams aren't willing to take, even if it seems likely the player is heading out of town. Teams must offer arbitration by Dec. 7.

The bat he used currently resides in the Baseball Hall of Fame . He also led the AL in slugging percentage in 1984. In , a succession of knee problems began which would gradually end his fielding career, forcing him to become a regular designated hitter . Despite the knee ailments and the resulting lack of speed, however, he remained a powerful hitter, picking up 166 hits in Midway through the season, the

Extractions: First Team As this column is printed, the one hundredth season of White Sox baseball is about to begin. It has been rumored that Sox fans will have the opportunity to pick the Sox All-Century Team this season, and this web site already has a White Sox Hall of Fame, but one advantage of having the opportunity to write a column is to be able to write about whatever one wishes. And it just so happens that my wish right now is to take a look the best Sox players of the club's first century. Friends from Brian Crawford's White Sox Mailing List are free to flame me for making different selections in some areas than I did a year or so ago. This list could change tomorrow as I ponder it more. After all, I'm just a fan, not a baseball expert. I have minimal knowledge of sabermetrics and exotic statistics. And tomorrow Mule Haas may look more appealing in right field than today's choice. This is first and foremost a fan's list, as an All-Century Team should be. Another nice thing about writing your own column is that you get to make up your own ground rules when you make selections like this, and here are mine. The first team, published this week, will consist of eight position players plus a designated hitter. All players will be selected by their primary position, including outfielders. (None of this unrealistic equalization of all three outfield positions for me!) The second team, published next week, will be chosen the same way. The pitching staff will consist of five starters and one relief pitcher. The second string pitching staff will be selected in the same way.
