The pictures are also the same ones accompanying the article.) Confessions of a Honolulu Hit Man And be robbed or beaten or mauled by me and my friends. I knocked Michael Anderson, Jr. unconscious, stuffed him behind the wheel of his van, and sent it flaming down the slopes of the Pali. I fenced hot opals, laundered syndicate money, and was hired twice by rival actors to kill Jack Lord - once as he was jogging in Kapiolani Park. Unfortunately that caper was unsuccessful, because I was shot in the head by a sniper hidden in the Rose Garden across the street. It was a classic double cross, sweetheart. Over the past ten years I have been pistol-whipped twice, strangled twice, shot four times, and booked by "Danno" annually. Thats right, baby, Im a character player on Hawaii Five-0 Normally I am disguised as a meek, middle-aged staff specialist for the Hawaii State Department of Education, but with a single call from my agent, I take vacation time, break out my hardware (I prefer a .44 caliber magnum - like Dirty Harry), and start working on the latest contract.

Extractions: No top-ranked teams were beaten in 1945. 1945 Recap The war was over by autumn, but Army kept up its football offensive with a second straight unbeaten season. Each time the Cadets snapped the ball in 1945 they gained eight yards. The average score of their nine wins slipped a bit to 465, but again they treated Notre Dame harshly. Facing the No.2 Irish at Yankee Stadium on Nov.9, Army crushed them, 480. A thousand miles from West Point, the talent pool wasn't quite so predictable. The war effort had wiped out Alabama's roster in 1943 and forced coach Frank Thomas to cancel the season. A year later, the Crimson Tide returned to go 512 and reach the Sugar Bowl. In '45, with sophomore Harry Gilmer at quarterback, they beat everyone they played, including Southern Cal by 20 points in the Rose Bowl. The loss was USC's first in the Rose Bowl after eight wins. The Cotton Bowl, however, belonged to Texas' sophomore quarterback Bobby Layne. Layne ran for four touchdowns, passed for two others and kicked four extra points as the No.10 Longhorns showed Missouri, 4027.

Extractions: Alpha Index Index by Sport History Bits Forum ... Search Table of Contents Other Resources The College Football Hall of Fame has a rather tangled, if not checkered, history. It began in 1947, when a group of Syracuse businessmen formed the National Football Foundation to promote the college sport in general, with establishing a hall of fame as one of its primary purposes. In a 1949 poll of college coaches, athletic directors, and sportswriters, Rutgers University was chosen as the site for the hall, because the first college football game (actually a soccer match) was played there in 1869. When the first induction, of 52 players and coaches, was held in 1951, the hall of fame existed only on paper - and it stayed on paper for more than 25 years. Arthur Evans, who had spearheaded the effort from the beginning, died shortly after that induction, and his successor, George E. Little, became seriously ill after taking over. As a result, the foundation was in disarray until it was reorganized in 1953 under the leadership of Admiral William "Bull" Halsey and sportswriter Grantland Rice.
