Weather by Andy Naylor Knight celebrates his early penalty at Port Vale Chris Iwelumo today joined Albion and will make his debut at Chesterfield tomorrow night. The Seagulls have initially signed the 24-year-old striker from Stoke on loan so he can play at Saltergate. But he will then become a free transfer capture which means boss Mark McGhee can still make one more loan signing before the end of the season. Iwelumo watched Albion's 1-1 draw against Stoke's Potteries neighbours Port Vale at Vale Park on Saturday and had talks with Mark McGhee on Friday night. He is desperate for regular first team football after being squeezed out at the Britannia Stadium because City manager Tony Pulis signed former Albion forward Ade Akinbiyi from Crystal Palace, Gifton Noel-Williams from Watford and Carl Asaba from Sheffield United. Iwelumo started his career with St Mirren before joining Stoke from Danish club Aarhus for £25,000 in February 2000. He scored five goals in 32 games last season. McGhee is still keen to re-sign Trevor Benjamin for a third and final month after he was recalled by Leicester.

Extractions: CHARLES MANN At Nevada Reno, Charles was voted the most valuable defensive lineman in the Big Sky Conference in 1981 and 1982. As a senior, his 14 sacks led the conference. He finished third on his team with 76 tackles and was voted a Division l-AA All-American. When Charles Mann came into the NFL in 1983, his number one goal was to earn respect from his peers. He earned it with four Pro Bowl appearances to his credit. One of the most physical pass-rushers to play the game, Charles used his 6'6", 270 lbs. size and strength to overpower opponents. The Redskins' Defensive End recorded 14 1/2 sacks in 1985 his highest output in one year. However, even when he was not sacking the quarterback, he was still a threat, as his 31 quarterback hurries will attest. The twelve-year veteran, who led the Superbowl XXII-Champion Redskins with 10 sacks, had compiled 83 sacks in his career. Now, that Charles is off the field, he works as hard as he did when he was playing. Mann credits his faith for helping him keep a balance in life. He devotes a great deal of his time to the Good Samaritan Foundation, a organization that he and Art Monk, Tim Johnson, and Earnest Byner founded in 1993 to help restore hope in the inner city. He also finds time to make personal appearances, especially enjoying talking to the youth with a motivational message to reach for your own goals, and walk hand in hand with Christ.

Extractions: Have you ever heard that expression, "records are made to be broken"? Well, not so fast with that one. I've dug up a few that aren't likely to be shattered, or even equaled any time soon. They have stood the test of time, and through either their sheer oddity, or the simple evolution that the pro game itself has gone through, you're likely to see these records etched in stone in the record books for as long as professional football is played: Feathers owns the record for the highest per-carry average for any 1000-yard rusher in NFL history. How solid is this record? Well, let's put it this way - in the last 65 seasons, no 1000-yard rusher in the NFL has gotten to within three yards of his average. And no one with a minimum of 100 attempts - PERIOD - has come within two yards of it. Randall Cunningham, a quarterback, had 7.78 yards per carry in 1990.

Extractions: THESE are not the best of times for Singapore football. Two weeks ago, a key Football Association of Singapore official, Quah Kim Song, acknowledged a fashionable perception of the S-League in a candid interview with this newspaper's soccer correspondent Jeffrey Low. Quah, a Malaysia Cup legend and a member of Singapore's most gifted football family, said that most clubs were not run well, the attitude of the managements had to change and that the quality of the football was less than enthralling. He was as courageous as he was candid. He was the first top FAS official who risked specificity - naming the clubs he thought could do with more professional management - in saying what was wrong with the League. He could have been less harsh if he had considered the personal sacrifices made by club bosses like Charles Siahaan of Sembawang and John Yap of Gombak United. True, they came into the League with their eyes wide open. But instead of jumping ship when times got tough, they dug into their own pockets to keep their clubs afloat. THE FANS HAVEN'T GIVEN UP Which local, non-sporting event can command the attention of some 10,000 Singaporeans every week for nine months of the year? Is there any local arts fixture or weekly community activity which does what S-League football does? And at half the price of a movie ticket?

What A Way To Live, What A Way To Die! What a way to be and to go! charles Schulz, my friend for 37 years and partner on60 TV realized That poor little guy is never going to kick that football. http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/columnists/neuharth/neu031.htm
Extractions: 11/01/00- Updated 03:37 PM ET He reminded people of all ages how to live with life's little disappointments. And to laugh about them. For 50 years. Now he has shown us how to die. In his sleep last Saturday night; just when his farewell comic strip was being inserted and distributed in the Sunday papers. Charles Schulz was much more than a cartoonist. He was a philosopher. His teachings were more useful than those of such noted philosophers as Aristotle or Confucius or Plato or Socrates. Here's why: He knew life is not always fair, but it still can be fun. He and his Peanuts gang took life very seriously, but never took themselves too seriously. So, Charlie Brown always missed the football and always got his kite stuck in a tree. So, Linus always sucked his thumb and carried his comfort blanket. So, Snoopy was a sleepy-eyed beagle who dozed at the typewriter. So, Lucy's curbside psychiatric clinic didn't offer a nickel's worth of good advice. So what? That's life. It made kids of all ages laugh, because they could relate. Some Schulz critics suggested he should create winners, not just losers. His response: "You can't create humor out of happiness." Yet, the few times I was in his presence, I sensed a serene sort of happiness about him.
