Gage, convention president, began the proceedings with a stirring call to arms: Are not the natural wants and emotions of humanity...shared equally by both sexes? Does man hunger and thirst, suffer cold and heat more than woman? Does he love and hate, hope and fear, joy and sorrow more than woman? Does his heart thrill with a deeper pleasure in doing good? Can his soul writhe in more bitter agony under the consciousness of evil or wrong? Is the sunshine more glorious, the air more quiet, the sounds of harmony more soothing, the perfume of flowers more exquisite, or forms of beauty more soul-satisfying to his senses than to hers. To all these interrogatories every one will answer, No! "Opening Address," The Proceedings of the Woman's Rights Convention, held at Akron, Ohio, May 28 and 29, 1851 , published 1851.

James Francis Thorpe or Wa-tho-huck in his Native American name which means "bright future", would have a bright future indeed. He would go on to make accomplishments in all of football, baseball and track and field. In 1907, his first year at Carlisle Indian School, the young Thorpe displayed remarkable skills in football and track and gained the attention of Pop Warner, then Carlisle's coach of these sports. Thorpe performed his amazing talent on the varsity football team, but in 1909 he withdrew from the school and went to North Carolina. There he worked as a farmhand and played semiprofessional baseball. Returning to Carlisle in 1911, Thorpe played halfback on the football team, contributing largely to Carlisle victories over some of the most powerful teams in the country. In 1911 and 1912 he made the All-American team. Thorpe excelled during this period in many other sports, including track and field, baseball, lacrosse, basketball, ice hockey, swimming, boxing, tennis, and archery. Thorpe was a member of the United States track and field team at the Olympic Games of 1912 and he was widely recognized as the world's greatest all-around athlete after he won both the pentathlon and the decathlon. Early in 1913, however, the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), after learning that he had played semiprofessional baseball, voided his amateur status and disallowed his Olympic victories. These were the words of King Gustav V of Sweden as he participated in ceremonies at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm. He had just presented two gold medals to Jim Thorpe, an American Indian. Later, when American sportswriters were asked to select the best sports performers of the half-century (1900-1950), Jim Thorpe was chosen twice: first as top American football player and later as best male athlete. James Francis Thorpe was born on his father's farm in Indian Territory (soon to be the state of Oklahoma) on May 28, 1888. His mother was a granddaughter of Chief Black Hawk of the Chippewas. Jim (whose tribal name was Bright Path) was a member of the Sac and Fox tribe. (Once separate Indian nations, the two finally came to be classified as one tribe.) Thorpe attended Sac and Fox Reservation School from ages 5-10 and Haskell Institute for Indians in Kansas (ages 10-13). At the age of 16 he was sent to Carlisle Industrial School in Pennsylvania, the leading American school for Indian young people. Jim was 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed 185 pounds.

The name and legend are still powerful, and his exploits are recounted with flair and exaggeration. But one thing that cannot be exaggerated is Thorpe's role as the game's first great running back, first gate attraction and spiritual guru. Thorpe had gained worldwide acclaim as a college football hero for the Carlisle Indian School and a double gold medal winner in the 1912 Olympics before he played his first professional football game in 1915 for the Canton Bulldogs. Thick-armed with a moon face, 42-inch chest and penetrating black eyes, Thorpe was first and foremost a great athlete, maybe the most versatile of the first half century. He complemented his football career by playing major league baseball.

Extractions: Important Jim Thorpe Carlisle Indians football jersey c.1911-12. There are few names that garner the level of respect in the history of organized athletics then that of Jim Thorpe. Born to Native American parents Thorpe impressed his coach (Pop Warner) at the Carlisle Indian school in 1907 by excelling in both track and football. After a brief two year hiatus Thorpe returned to Carlisle in 1911 and 1912 to become an All-American in both seasons. At the Olympic Games of 1912 Thorpe won the title as the World's Greatest Athlete winning both the pentathlon and decathlon and if that was not enough he then went on to play professional baseball for six seasons while organizing a pro football team from Canton, Ohio. In 1950 he was selected as the Athlete of the first half of the 20th century and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963. The offered jersey is of a dark brown wool knit retaining its original Spalding tag inside front tail. Jersey front features large white "C" and on the sleeves are three rings of white surrounding red. Shirt shows great usage wear including several embroidered hole repairs (period) and has turned down collar which has been stitched onto body. The import and rarity of such a piece cannot be overstated given the significance of Thorpe in American sport and the scarcity of uniform pieces from his era. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this jersey will be donated by Joel Platt to the Jim Thorpe Association Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame. Originated from the Jim Thorpe collection via Michael Lopota and includes Jim Thorpe auto. 8"x10" photo personalized to Lopota. Jersey will be accompanied by numerous pieces of documentation to include: letter of provenance from Joel Platt, photocopies of period letters and postcards relating to Michael Lopota/Jim Thorpe, letter from Grace Thorpe acknowledging the donation of proceeds to the Thorpe Association HOF, letter from the Thorpe Assoc. HOF acknowledging donation of proceeds, LOA from PSA/DNA J.Spence-S.Grad (autographed photo). Jersey will also include a fine custom made frame which houses the jersey and auto. photo: VG-EX
