Extractions: Derrick Thomas Academy On June 3, 2001, the Derrick Thomas Academy, a tuition-free public charter school, was launched in downtown Kansas City at 201 East Armour Plaza. The academy is the first-ever public elementary charter school named in honor of an NFL hero. Opening its doors in September 2002 to approximately 600 students, DTA will expand to include the sixth through eight grades over the next three years. "As much as anything Derrick did on the football field, it was his contribution off it that stamps his time here on Earth," observed Chiefs President Carl Peterson of Thomas. "He was committed to helping others. At the time of his death, I stated that something good would come of this because a good man left us. This good, perhaps, can be a school that holds his name and continues his commitment of service to his community." For more information on the school, please contact the start-up office at 816.753.0954.

Extractions: 1 Jan 1967 - 8 Feb 2000 K ansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas, one of the dominant defensive players in the National Football League, died on Tuesday, February 8, 2000, from cardiorespiratory arrest, 16 days after suffering a broken back in a car accident on an icy road. Derrick was in a Miami hospital at the time of his death being treated for injuries that left him paralyzed from the chest down. He was 33 years old. T homas was driving a car during a snowstorm on January 23 as he and two friends headed to the Kansas City airport to fly to St. Louis for the NFC Championship game. He lost control of the car and it overturned at least three times. Thomas and passenger, Michael Tellis, 49, (longtime friend and business partner) were NOT wearing seat belts and were thrown from their car. Tellis was killed. A third person in the car, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained only minor injuries. D errick Thomas had been a Kansas City Chief for eleven years. He was selected by the Chiefs in the first round (fourth pick overall) of the 1989 NFL Draft after Troy Aikman, Tony Mandarich and Barry Sanders. Derrick started his career in Kansas City and unfortunately, ended it here, too. W hile wearing Chiefs jersey number 58, Derrick Thomas accomplished many records which included: Nine consecutive Pro Bowl appearances (1989 - 1997), owning a team career record for sacks (126.5) for 883.5 yards, safeties (3) and fumble recoveries (18) during his career in the Chief's Red and Gold, and establishing a new NFL record with seven sacks in a game on Seattle's Dave Krieg (former Chief quarterback) on 11 Nov 1990.

Derrick Thomas Died From Pulmonary Embolism He set records as a football player, and he was thomas, paralyzed from the chest downin a Jan. of the body, and that s what happened with derrick, Green said http://www.kcstar.com/item/pages/printer.pat,sports/377438d4.209,.html
Extractions: Date: 02/09/00 22:15 MIAMI An autopsy Wednesday confirmed that Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas died Tuesday from a pulmonary embolism. Frank Eismont, co-director of the spinal-cord injury unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital, described a pulmonary embolism as a blood clot that generally forms in the legs and travels up through the heart. It then gets stuck in the artery that goes to the lungs. "It blocks the flow from the heart to the lungs," Eismont said. "It essentially stops the heart output." Doctors admitted Wednesday that the shock of Thomas' death still hasn't worn off. "He was so upbeat, so positive," neurosurgeon Barth Green said. "Everything was going so well. He set records as a football player, and he was setting records again before this tragic thing happened." According to Green, 3 to 15 percent of patients with spinal-cord injuries suffer from blood clots. There were no signs of a blood clot, doctors said Wednesday. But when Thomas was being moved from his hospital bed to a wheelchair on his way to therapy Tuesday, something triggered a massive blood clot in his pulmonary artery. Thomas, paralyzed from the chest down in a Jan. 23 car crash in Kansas City, went into cardiorespiratory arrest and died minutes later.
Extractions: On the cover A hero passes on On Veteran's Day in 1990, Derrick Thomas said he was going to dedicate the game he was about to play against the Oakland Raiders to his father. Thomas' father was a helicopter pilot who was killed in the Vietnam War in the ironically named Operation Linebacker II. When all was said and done that day, Derrick Thomas had honored his father with seven sacks in that single game, a feat that happens only in video games. He was a pass-rushing outside linebacker in the Lawrence Taylor mold, but carried himself with infinitely more class. As a football player, Derrick Thomas was a Hall-of-Fame caliber player. As a Patriots fan, I could smell the sloth-like Drew Bledsoe's fear through the television when Thomas was eyeing him. Derrick Thomas passed on Tuesday morning. He was thirty-three years old. When I first heard the news, I could not fight back the tears. While it was essentially a given that Thomas' playing career was over after being paralyzed below the legs in a car accident that occurred on an icy highway as he was rushing to fly to the Super Bowl, nearly everyone expected Thomas to survive. His death came as a shock to his family, the Kansas City Chiefs organization and football fans.

Extractions: A bright light goes dark too soon, a shooting star burns across the sky for only an instant, and like these Derrick Thomas' Life was much to short among us. The man known as "DT" to football fans everywhere will be remembered not only as a football player but also for the many lives he touched. It was not an uncommon sight to see this large gentle man walk into the hospital with teddy bears in both arms and then cry when the parents would call later and tell him their child had died clutching his football card to their chest. When there was a need this one man would go from locker to locker, demanding at least $100 from each of his rich teammates because he had decided he wanted to raise $14,000 to feed 750 families. When there was no other way for them to go this one individual would pay for 18 strangers to go college, just because. When it was discovered that inner city kids were unable to use the public library one person would write a single check to cover the $61,500 in library fines accrued by Kansas City kids. Derrick Thomas would . . .
