Extractions: Walter Payton, 1954-1999 NFL running back, Hall of Famer, and philanthropist Walter Payton, known to fans and football teammates as "Sweetness" for his good nature, died November 1st 1999 after a brief but intense struggle with cancer. Payton, holder of many NFL and NCAA records, was 45 years old. Born July 25th 1954 in the town of Columbia, Mississippi, Walter Payton was known for defying the usual rules of his game. Smaller than most running backs at 5'10" and an average weight around 200 lbs., Payton's speed, determination, and tenacity made him a standout in college football as well as his later career in the NFL. Payton set an NCAA record of 464 career points during his years playing college football for Jackson State, with 46 points scored in one game. Payton brought attention to the previously overlooked school, and the 2-time Little All-American and Heisman Trophy contender led pro-ball scouts to revise their recruiting practices to include smaller colleges. In 1975, Payton emerged a first round NFL draft choice, and was signed to the Chicago Bears.

Extractions: A Tribute In the 13 years that # 34 pranced like some mythical creature among the mere mortals of the National Football league, he worked his way into the hearts of fans and a city, in a way that no athlete ever could, nor may ever do again. To be a young football fan in Chicago during the years from 1975 till 1985 meant the only thing you cheered were those sweet few minutes when Walter had the ball. Those runs were dazzling, unbelievable, head-shaking, awe inspiring works of art that kept Bears fans on their feet, cheering and walking away from games with dreamy satisfied smiles on their faces, smiles inspite of the fact that those Bear teams did not wax victorious much and seldom rose too near the top of their division. But Sweetness as he was called, and never was a nickname more approriate or deserved, was a warrior, and oh so fun to watch. He was shooting straight up over piles of would be tacklers and grabbing hang time across goal lines long before Air Jordan ever arrived in Chicago. He could catch the ball extremely well and even threw 8 touchdown passes in his career. And if he was not handling the ball he was more than likely leveling some defensive player who outweighed him by 30 or more pounds with a crushing, perfectly executed block. Walter did it all in those years with the Bears and he gave his all. In every season, every game and in every play, nothing less than 100 % all the time. Whatever it took to lead the Bears to victory Walter would do. Never selfish, never sorry, never saying, "Here look at me" like so many players of today. He worked and conditioned himself in the offseason with a grueling training regimen that would leave the strongest of NFL players shaking and weak. Although not the biggest, nor strongest of running backs, he may have been the most powerful and was arguably the one with the most heart. Sweetness was as Coach Ditka and many others have said perhaps the greatest all around football

Extractions: What a thoughtful thing to say...and it truly sounds like it came from your heart and Walter's. I am sure that he would be honored to have coaches doing that in his memory. That's what he was all about. Doing good for the kids. I live about 20 miles from his house and he really was an incredible guy! I have friends whose kids went to (public) school with his son. He always kept himself available to all and willing to help all. So yes, please give some of his generosity to the less talented...that would be a perfect tribute to football's "Sweetness".
