Figuratively, their hometowns are worlds apart, one a farming town in Iowa and the other the most populous urban center in Michigan. Their professional careers began at different times, a full six years separating the two gifted defensive players. Their football teams never faced each other on any level of competition. The elder statesman has been to the Pro Bowl twice. The young upstart, attempting to learn two positions this summer, has yet to start his first National Football League game. With such stark contrasts, why then has Green Bay's Keith McKenzie been compared so often to Buffalo veteran Bryce Paup?
Extractions: ESPN'S CHRIS BERMAN SOMEtimes called the NFC Central the NFC Norris, alluding to the name of the rugged former NHL division. Phonetically, that was a reach for the NFC Central; it's not for the NFC North True to the heart of Berman's metaphor, no one in this division will be taking weekend trips to sunny Florida anytime soon. (The Tampa Bay Buccaneers moved to the newly formed NFC South.) The Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and Detroit Lions all are together again like one big black-and-blue family. The Lions will open Ford Field, and the Bears will be playing in downstate Champaign while Soldier Field is rebuilt But the home of the 2002 NFC North champions will be the hallowed grounds of Lambeau Field"the frozen tundra," as Berman calls it. Here's why: 1. GREEN BAY PACKERS
Extractions: AS THEY LEFT THE FIELD ON October 7 as one of the few survivors of a Hail Flutie, the Cleveland Browns defenders looked more relieved than impressed with themselves. After all, it was merely the fourth game of the season. But it was a defining moment, too, one Browns players, coaches, and fans might look back on when the season ends. "We're a team," linebacker Jamir Miller said after the 20-16 victory over the San Diego Chargers at Cleveland Browns Stadium. "We're finally a team. When I say team, I mean that we are all playing together, and we believe in each other. And we all feel that as long as we play together, we can accomplish anything." While the Browns probably won't accomplish anything too special this seasonlike a championshipthey certainly appear to be on their way to respectability. In fact, within a few years, a Super Bowl appearance may not seem like a distant dream.

Extractions: OUR ROUNDUP THIS WEEK starts with what is very much a good-news story for the Hibees! The Hibernian Ladies side have been in sparkling action in recent weeks, and never more so than in crushing Cove Rangers 6-2 a couple of weeks ago. The victory was required to keep the Hibees at the top of the league table and thanks to goals from Suzanne Malone, Julie Ferguson, Karen McKenzie, Julia Ralph and a double from Pauline Hamill they did just that! The crunch game for the girls though was a week earlier. Kilmarnock have of course dominated the Ladies game for some time, but the Hibees Scottish Cup win over Killie last season gave good notice that Hibernian were the rising force in the Scottish Ladies game. And the Hibs underlined that by travelling to Ayrshire and beating Killie 3-1 with goals from Pauline Hamill, Mhairi Gilmour and Suzanne Malone. Iain Johnstone told www.hibs.co.uk By the end of the first half we were 1-1. I felt we dominated the 2nd half and thoroughly deserved the win. The pick of the goals was the 2 nd , scored by Mhairi Gilmour. It came from good play by Suzanne Malone on the edge of the 18 yard box, who played a square pass to Pauline Hamill - who dummied it for Mhairi to pick up and blast into the top right corner from 18 yards.

Help PLYMOUTH ARGYLE HAVE had the highest number of shots this season (which explains why they are the division's highest scorers). But the main reason for their 2-0 win at Colchester United was the unwitting help they were given by the home goalkeeper, Simon Brown. Both goals, scored in the opening 11 minutes, stemmed from Brown errors. The first came when a Tony Capaldi free-kick went through his hands and legs. Then, following an attempt at a punched clearance that went to Plymouth's Paul Wotton, Marino Keith scored the other goal from Wotton's cross. The most exciting match was Barnsley 's 3-3 draw at home to Stockport County . The latter, 1-0 up and then 2-1 down, must have felt that three points were safe when Kevin Betsy scored his second goal to give them a 3-2 lead. But Robert Lambert equalised.

Help There is nothing like a thrilling Cup tie to stir the emotions. Sadly this third-round replay was nothing like a thrilling cup tie. Still, that will be of little concern to Peterborough, who set off for a ludicrously scheduled Second Division fixture at Tranmere tonight able to reflect on the sumptuous £500,000 cash windfall that last night's victory brings. Newcastle will visit London Road in Sky's live televised fourth-round tie on Sunday after Posh disposed of the Premiership club's north-east neighbours with a minimum of fuss at the second attempt.
