Extractions: College Football Like You've Never Seen It Before The Insight Bowl has transformed into a new and exciting brand of college football with Bank One Ballpark playing host to the unique game, in the unique facility. The sidelines aren't what football fans are accustomed to seeing, after all there is a dugout behind the visitors bench. The northern most end zone is backed up to a bullpen. There are no nets behind the goal posts. If you look around for a scoreboard, you might see R-H-E somewhere. That is because Bank One Ballpark isn't usually a football stadium. For the second consecutive year, Bank One Ballpark is transformed into a football stadium for the only football game to be played under its retractable roof: The Insight Bowl. This post season match-up got its start In April 1989, when the NCAA gave its stamp of approval to the non-profit Copper Bowl Foundation to hold the game in Tucson's Arizona Stadium under the name the Copper Bowl. For many years the Copper Bowl enjoyed success in Tucson hosting regional match-ups featuring some of the best players in college football.

Extractions: Football: Johnson hits 2,000 in blowout Penn State demolishes Michigan State, 61-7 Sunday, November 24, 2002 By Ray Fittipaldo, Post-Gazette Sports Writer UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. If every Heisman Trophy candidate needs a signature play to boost his mass appeal, this was Larry Johnson's. Determined not to be embarrassed any longer by Penn State's senior running back, Michigan State Coach Morris Watts ordered his defense to play 10 players near the line of scrimmage on a second-and-8 play from the Michigan State 38 late in the second quarter of the regular-season finale at Beaver Stadium yesterday. More on Just as determined to reach 2,000 yards in a season, Johnson took a pitch left, slipped through mass of humanity near the line of scrimmage and raced into some elite company. The 38-yard touchdown run with 2:38 remaining in the first half gave Johnson 279 yards and four touchdowns on the day, and a milestone that only eight other people in the history of college football have reached. Johnson, Penn State's late-charging Heisman Trophy candidate, became the ninth player in NCAA history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season in Penn State's 61-7 blowout victory against the Spartans.
Plummer Deserves Heisman Nod Quarterback The MVP of college football, Jake Plummer of Arizona State, edges IowaState s Troy Davis and Texas Tech s byron hanspard both cleared the 2,000 http://dailybeacon.utk.edu/issues/v73/n70/comment.70s.html
Extractions: With the college football season about to conclude, it is time for the obligatory postseason awards. With this in mind, here is one writer's college football All-America team. Quarterback: The MVP of college football, Jake Plummer of Arizona State, edges Florida's Danny Wuerffel for this honor. Plummer's resiliency and intangibles have led the Sun Devils to an undefeated season and prime positioning for a national championship. While Plummer's raw statistics do not necessarily measure up with others, ASU would be 6-5 without him. Second Team: Wuerffel. Third Team: Peyton Manning, Tennessee. Honorable Mention: Beau Morgan, Air Force; Steve Sarkisian, BYU. Running Back: Two Big 12 runners are the obvious choice here. Iowa State's Troy Davis and Texas Tech's Byron Hanspard both cleared the 2,000-yard mark this season, and both should finish in the top five of the Heisman balloting. Davis could win the award outright after Wuerffel's performance last Saturday. Hanspard is an early favorite for next year's award. Second Team: Darnell Autry, Northwestern and Warrick Dunn, Florida State. Third Team: Tiki Barber, Virginia and Ron Dayne, Wisconsin. Honorable Mention: Kevin Faulk, LSU and Raymond Priester, Clemson. Wide Receiver: Wyoming's Marcus Harris is the top receiver in the nation, and has broken many national receiving records this season. A sure-fire first round draft pick, Harris has propelled the Cowboys to a WAC Championship matchup with BYU. Joining Harris on the first team is Rae Carruth of Colorado, Koy Detmer's primary target and an outstanding athlete. Second Team: Joey Kent, Tennessee and Andre Cooper, Florida State. Third Team: Reidel Anthony, Florida and Keith Poole, Arizona State.

Extractions: National championship implications, Heisman Trophy considerations and school pride are all on the line this weekend in the biggest college football weekend thus far. Many games of importance are taking place this Saturday, and the seasons of certain schools will improve or take a turn for the worse. Let's preview five key games of interest coming up this weekend: Florida at Tennessee Anyone who follows college football realizes the marquee game this weekend and maybe of the entire season takes place in Knoxville. The Southeastern Conference and national championship picture will be clearer after Saturday, as either the Vols or the Gators will take a major step toward winning one or both. The much-anticipated clash between quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Danny Wuerffel makes this game a must-see, either in the stadium or on television. The biggest crowd in college football history will fill Neyland Stadium. But you already knew all of this. If the Volunteer offensive line and secondary does its job, this one is academic. If not, it could be a long day for the Vols. Florida has won three straight SEC titles. The fourth stops here.

It's time to back up all those draft day challenges, ridicules and accusations with performance. In the immortal words of Mills Lane: ''Let's get it on.'' QUICK SLANTS Patriots RB Sedrick Shaw had four TDs in the preseason, but rookie Robert Edwards looks to be coach Pete Carroll's main man. Edwards missed the first three preseason games with a groin injury, but rushed for 38 yards in being featured in the preseason finale and is healthy. Philadelphia RB Charlie Garner says he's fine after spraining his ankle in the team's preseason finale. He is expected to play in the opener.

Extractions: The Associated Press HOUSTON (AP) - All-America running back Byron Hanspard and lineman Casey Jones completed last fall's semester at Texas Tech without passing a single course, the Houston Chronicle reported Sunday. Hanspard, who rushed for 2,084 yards and won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back, finished the semester with a grade-point average of 0.00, the Chronicle said, citing unidentified sources. A day after Tech's 27-0 loss to Iowa in the Alamo Bowl, Hanspard - a junior - announced he would make himself eligible for the 1997 NFL draft. Jones, a senior offensive lineman, also posted a 0.00 GPA last fall, the Chronicle said. Jones was ruled ineligible at the beginning of the season but was able to play in the Red Raiders' final six games after obtaining a series of court orders blocking the ruling. Hanspard, a licensed minister, told The Dallas Morning News, ``I've always passed, and I've never been on academic probation. The devil always tries to bring something bad on people doing his (God's) work.'' He questioned the importance of the report.

He has won more conference games than any other Red Raider head coach. He earned three Southwest Conference Coach of the Year honors. He was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Associations Hall of Honor in 1991. He wins at home. Dykes has fashioned a 41-21 record in Lubbock, which includes a nine-game winning streak that was narrowly ended by defending national champion Nebraska 24-10 in 1996. Prior to that loss to the Huskers, the last defeat at home came early in the 1994 season to Nebraska. His teams improve as the season progresses. Hanspard, who this season became only sixth player in NCAA history to rush for more than 2,000 yards, made the announcement one day after gaining a season-low 64 yards in the Red Raiders' 27-0 loss to Iowa in the Alamo Bowl. ``I will be giving up my senior year to go into the NFL draft,'' said Hanspard, who made his decision last week, but wanted to wait until after the bowl game to make it public. ``NFL football is a bigger platform for Byron Hanspard to spread the word of God. ... The Father is never going to lead me wrong.'' Hanspard, a licensed Pentecostal minister who said the Lord told him to attend Tech, added that he doesn't believe playing on Sundays will interfere with his faith. Hanspard is the third underclassman thus far to declare their pro eligibility, joining Iowa State running back Troy Davis and Indiana tailback Alex Smith. Hanspard and Davis, college football's first two-time 2,000-yard rusher, are likely to be among the top running backs chosen.
