Extractions: published March 22, 2002 TAMPA While outgoing running back Warrick Dunn was visiting One Buc Place on Thursday to wrap up personal business, the team was busy interviewing and working out two candidates to replace him. Former Bears first-round pick Curtis Enis and former Falcons running back/returner Byron Hanspard became the latest in a convoy of running backs the Bucs are considering. Neither played in the NFL last season. This week, the Bucs also welcomed Rams free agent Robert Holcombe and Cardinals free agent Michael Pittman. They may be interested in free agents Ricky Watters and Dorsey Levens. "We have an opportunity to look at the free agent backs," coach Jon Gruden said. "It might be a committee of backs. We'll wait and see. But we're going to add some players to that group, absolutely."

Extractions: Arizona RECEIVER WOES: QB Jake Plummer has begun light throwing and is expected to be ready for the opener. He missed the final two preseason games after suffering a strained thumb on his throwing hand. But who will he throw to? Franchise WR Rob Moore still is unsigned. Frank Sanders sprained his left ankle in the final preseason game. If he is ready by Sunday, he will not be at 100 percent. That puts a great deal of pressure on rookie WR David Boston, who had an impressive camp that was slowed briefly by a braised heel, and Andy McCullough. TE Terry Hardy made a strong push late in the preseason after being sidelined early because of a severe hamstring strain. And he looked good. He is a strong blocker, and his receiving ability has been a pleasant surprise and welcome addition for Plummer, who says he loves throwing to Hardy. PITTMAN'S PUSH: RB Michael Pittman made a late preseason push that could lift him past Mario Bates into the No. 2 slot behind Adrian Murrell, who had a splendid preseason. Murrell is reading and cutting as deftly as he did late last season. Pittman, versatile and heavily muscled, still has to hit the hole harder. For such a potentially powerful player, he still takes baby steps to the line. In the open field, he's fast, as he has shown returning kickoffs and covering punts. He also has good hands and often is flexed out as a wide receiver.... FB Joel Makovicka gets better and better every game. He's a good lead blocker, and although he is not the receiving threat Larry Centers was, Makovicka can catch and can't be ignored by defenses. Lee Shappell

Extractions: Arizona LOOKING FOR A LEADER: Last season, the dub got its leadership from veteran co-captains Larry Centers, Lomas Brown and Jamir Miller. Now they're all gone, and the club is anything but better for it. The team placed itself in a horrible salary cap bind by giving Jake Plummer a league-record $15 million signing bonus when it extended his contract last December. Although Plummer represents the future of the team, the value of Centers, Brown and Miller in the locker room cannot be underestimated or easily replaced.... With Centers released, second-year RB Michael Pittman, a dedicated weightlifter who has returner speed and receiver hands, takes a giant step forward in the plans. Pittman has the size and versatility to thrive in one-back sets, which the club will use more often as it shifts to multiple wideout formations. SPECIAL TEAMS ANALYSIS: One of the most-watched battles in training camp will be between kickers Joe Nedney, who had a torn ACL repaired in his left (kicking) knee, and Chris Jacke, who replaced Nedney during the final month and playoffs last season. Early indications in spring camps indicate Nedney will be back. The club could live with P Scott Player but would not be opposed to upgrading the position if it found someone better who would work cheap. The return game is up for grabs. Terry Battle, an All-American returner in college before two lackluster NFL seasons, has been signed. Pittman can be a returner, as can Mario Bates. Clarence Williams, an undrafted rookie, caught the coaches' eyes during the spring.

Extractions: Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999 Anders, Anderson injuries increase fantasy values of backups By Jeff Agrest, Associate editor There seems to be an injury bug flying around among NFL running backs. Leon Johnson, done. Shawn Bryson, done. Daryl Johnston, done. Derrick Cullors, done. And the list goes on and on. Both injuries open the door for backups to take center stage, Bam Morris and Rashaan Shehee for Kansas City and Byron Hanspard for Atlanta. What follows are breakdowns of all three players and what their fantasy values might be. At this point, all three are worthy of being claimed, since all three should see playing time in the immediate future. Extractions: So, you wanna bet on football? You say you can predict the outcomes with certainty, and you want to turn your hard-earned cash into more cash? Well, then, consider the case of the Southern Methodist Univeristy football team, which has been a study in unpredictability and a prognosticator's nightmare this season. SMU opened the season by hosting the University of Arkansas, who has hovered around the top 25 for most of the season. The Mustangs proceeded to lose quarterback Ramon Flanigan for the year with a separated hip, but still managed to defeat the Razorbacks. How did SMU follow up such a potentially-galvanizing victory? They promptly lost the next four games including one-sided margins against the U.S. Naval Academy, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Texas and appeared to be sinking back into the oblivion that has characterized the program since its return from the NCAA death penalty in 1989. True to form, though, SMU followed their brush with glory by sinking again. They dropped a 38-15 decision to the University of Houston who hadn't won a game since they beat SMU last season last Saturday.
