Extractions: Click on image Edward "Pappy" Edwards, a star basketball and football player at Hazard High School in the 1930s, died on December 19th 1999 at the age of 84. He was a well known Hazard painter for 65 years. His painter's outfit, hat and trademark cigar were a familiar site in the area. Edwards was a gifted athlete. He made the Hazard High School Football team while in the 7th and 8th grades and was a four year starter from 1932-1935. He once scored 40 points against Buckhorn, but he'll best be remembered for kicking a football over a hundred yards during a game against Benham High school in 1934. Pappy's famous football kick even gained national attention from Ripley's Believe It Or Not . Edwards was a starter on the Hazard Basketball team from 1933 through 1935 and went to the State Tournament in both 1933 and 1934. Edwards was voted all regional honors in the State Tournament two years in a row. Pappy played basketball and football at Translyvania University as a Freshman and won the Intramural boxing championship and fought in the Golden Gloves competition in Lexington. He was Captain of an All State Junior College team in 1938. He played for the Hazard Junior College, and later Jones Junior College in Mississippi. But the road to collegiate glory was marked by near tragedy in September 1938. A pilot was looking for someone to fly with to Cleveland, Ohio to pick up some parts. It would be Pappy's first airplane ride. The plane crashed on the C.V. Whitney Farm in Lexington. Edwards was critically injured with a broken back and fractured skull. He spent 23 days in the hospital. He later would fly again in the service during the war.

Extractions: This cant be happening. Half a season into his professional career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Keith Smith has his shot. No more holding the clipboard, and definitely no splitting snaps. Its his show. And then, like a cruel replay of his freshman season, everything goes to hell. [ Read article Perhaps one of the most disarming athletes on campus, Jason Johnson wrapped up his senior season as the UAs single-season passing leader, with 3,327 yards. But records meant little to Johnson this season, as the team stumbled to a 4-8 record and capped off the second-straight season without a Pac-10 win at home. To make matters worse, Johnson and his teammates had to weather a storm of publicity surrounding their coach John Mackovic and his ability to retain his job despite a near-mutiny by almost half the team. [ Read article Wade named football team MVP At the football teams annual awards banquet Sunday night, Arizona senior receiver Bobby Wade, the schools all-time career receptions leader with 230 catches, was named the teams Most Valuable Player. Wade set the UA single-season mark this year with 93 receptions, breaking the mark of 88 set by Dennis Northcutt in 1999. Wade finished with 1,389 yards this year and is the UA career record holder in that category with 3,351 yards in his four-year career. [
Youth Radio Betting a $1 on a football game would be such a serious BEN Do all kids who gamblesmall amounts become big gamblers eventually? Or did jason just go too far http://www.youthradio.org/sports/020618_gambling.shtml
Extractions: Recently, the NCAA, backed by congressional allies such as Senator John McCain, proposed a ban on college sports betting. Youth Radio's Ben Simrin gives a perspective on the controversial issue. SCENE: Betting conversation between teenagers BEN: JOE: I've been a sports fan all my life. I remember in like the second grade when we were learning multiplication, everyone was good at multiples of three, you know, the easy ones, and I was best at multiples of seven because of all the football games I watched. BEN: JOE: We would gamble on like football games, just random football games. That's still what I do, basketball games for like $1 or something. The first couple times I gambled. Basically the same thing. It was pretty serious because winning a dollar back then was good. You could go buy some candy or whatever. It would rarely go over $1 because fourth or fifth grade we didn't have any money. Betting a $1 on a football game would be such a serious thing. It would be so intense to watch the game and like you would be rooting so hard for your team, for the team you wanted to win. It was just like crazy.
Extractions: Cavalier Daily Associate Editor There just aren't that many ways to analyze offensive linemen statistically. They're not as lucky as the defense, who have stats with intimidating names like tackles, sacks and interceptions, or the offensive backs and receivers, whose numbers get crunched by guys with degrees from MIT. But, somehow, that hasn't stopped Clemson center Jason Gamble from attracting the attention of the college football world. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound behemoth arrived in Death Valley in 1996 by way of Hutchinson Community College. At Hutchinson, in his native Kansas, Gamble earned Junior College All-American honors at left tackle and caught the attention of Clemson Asst. Coach John Latina. He signed with the Tigers for the 1996 season, but redshirted his first season to acclimate to playing center. The transition from the Jayhawk State, where Gamble spent most of his first two decades, to Death Valley, went smoothly. "It wasn't that big of a deal," Gamble said. "The people are nice here, just like in the Midwest. ... Being so far away from my parents wasn't a big deal. I didn't really plan on living with them forever."
