The Road to Super Bowl XXXV By BRUCE LOWITT TAMPA Left tackle Lomas Brown's 16-year journey to the Super Bowl snaked torturously through Detroit, Arizona and Cleveland before he landed in New York and got into the fast lane to Tampa. "I don't think I would have appreciated it as much if it had happened my first couple of years in the league," said Brown, a 1985 first-round draft pick by the Lions who signed with the Giants as a free agent last March. "It feels so much sweeter when you get to this point after waiting so long. I'm glad it took 16 years."

Extractions: published August 4, 2002 LAKE BUENA VISTA The Tampa Bay area is full of retirees, hard-working people who have paid their dues, saved their money and want to enjoy the rest of their lives in paradise. Lomas Brown is not one of them. The 18-year NFL veteran did not sign with the Bucs without a guarantee that he would be given every opportunity to win the starting left tackle spot. "We brought that guy in to play," coach Jon Gruden said. "And inspire. And when it's all said and done, I'll be shocked if Lomas Brown doesn't go out there and play like Lomas Brown can." It may take time. Brown had all but decided to shut it down this season. He had accomplished almost everything in his celebrated career. He had gone to seven Pro Bowls and appeared in Super Bowl XXXV with the Giants. Brown was caring for his ill father in Miami when the Bucs called. "They want to see how much I have left in the tank," Brown said.

Extractions: Real Role Models Football Giants have 'Hometown Huddle' with kids at the Foundling By VINCENT F. IOSUE Running back Greg Comella was cheering as kids scrambled and jumped their way through an obstacle course. Down the hall, wide receiver Joe Jurevicius was painting a large sign with two young children. In another room, tight end Howard Cross was having a catch with a teenage girl standing with her walker. This was the scene Oct. 17 at the New York Foundling Hospital in Manhattan, as eight New York Giants spent their off-day playing games, signing autographs and bringing smiles to the faces of kids in the hospital's Medical Center for Pediatrics and Rehabilitation and teenagers from the Ranch/Mott Haven Prevention Program and Project Basement. These are outreaches to youngsters from upper Manhattan who may be neglected or exposed to abuse or who live in an area with a high gang population. "It's special," Jurevicius said. "Some of these kids need a little bit of motivation, some of them just need to smile. That's something simple that we can all do, no matter if you're a professional athlete or a regular working person."

Extractions: NFL Insider SAN DIEGO (Jan. 23, 2003) For the first 15 seasons of his 18-year NFL career, the only way Lomas Brown was going to the Super Bowl was as a spectator. However, for the second time in three years, the veteran Pro Bowl tackle is in the NFL championship game. Brown was a starting offensive tackle in Super Bowl XXXV for the New York Giants, who lost to the Baltimore Ravens 34-7. He signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before this season, and will do his best to help them win a ring as a reserve in Super Bowl XXXVII. When asked at what point the Giants lost Super Bowl XXXV, Brown was extremely candid. "I think we lost Super Bowl XXXV after the NFC Championship Game," he said. "We beat Minnesota 41-0, which nobody expected, not even us. I think we were so ecstatic and overwhelmed about how we won that we felt that we had reached our ultimate goal. We kind of acted as if the season was over. The Super Bowl was like icing on the cake. The Ravens played hungry and we didn't. Brown has been a guide for his Buccaneers teammates, most of whom have never played in the Super Bowl.

Extractions: Corey Simon and the rest of our Sweet 16 wasted no time making their presence felt AS FAR AS ROOKIES WERE CONCERNED, the 2000 season was all about defensive linemen and running backs. While no quarterbacks or receivers had much of an impact, it was a terrific year for pass-rushers, run-stoppers, and the guys toting the ball. Not many teams would complain about a rookie running back who rushes for 1,000 yards, which is why the folks in Denver (with Mike Anderson) and Baltimore (Jamal Lewis) were so jubilant Ron Dayne of the New York Giants probably also would have reached 1,000 yards if he hadn't shared running duties with Tiki Barber. What's more, Sammy Morris was an all-purpose threat for Buffalo until getting hurt; he could solve the backfield woes the Bills have experienced since Thurman Thomas began to decline. Trying to stop such players-when they weren't rattling quarterbacks, that iswere five highly productive freshmen, including the Cleveland Browns' Courtney Brown, the top pick overall in the draft. While Brown was superb for a bad team, New Orleans Saints end Darren Howard was a factor on one of the finest defenses in the NFL. Philadelphia's Corey Simon was similar to Howard, although Simon operates inside, where he helped the Eagles defense look like it did in the Buddy Ryan days.
