Extractions: Wiry, fearless and incredibly tough - both mentally and physically - Robert Brooks is poised to make yet another "comeback" after rebounding from nagging back and hamstring problems which hampered him throughout the 1998 season His injuries required him to miss four games and settle for 31 catches and 420 yards, both modest totals for one of his superior talents The sinewy South Carolinian, who underwent a second surgery early this past offseason (Jan. 6) to correct a disk problem in his lower back (after undergoing a similar operation during last year's training camp), is confident of once again returning to the NFL's 1,000-yard receiving elite Pepper Burruss, the Packers' veteran head trainer, has reason to take the remarkably resilient wideout at his word, asserting, "On the basis of toughess per-pound, Robert Brooks has to be perhaps the toughest player I've ever been around in my 23 years in the NFL" Burruss clearly considers Number 87 a legitimate medical marvel affer seeing him rebound from a devastating, career-threatening knee injury to capture National Football League 'Comeback Player of the Year' honors in 1997 with one of the most remarkable recoveries in pro football history

Extractions: Outlook : For 30 years, Robert S. Brooks has been in the coaching profession. A short while ago, R. S. Brooks decided to use his experience as a coach and a teacher mentor to bring children into the sports world. In the year 2000 the first Robert S. Brooks football camp was formed. Staffing was hand picked by Mr. Brooks himself. Brooks, along with assistant Phil Furman, had only 38 children attend camp that year; little did they know this foundation would be the outcome of that camp. They found that there was a need in the community, as well as outlying communities, for a camp such as this one. In 2001, they tripled in size creating a need for more coaches and sites. They learned that young children wanted very much to learn the sport itself, not just play a position. That is why their fundamental camps teach children to learn all positions in different sports. Therefore, they aren't just playing a position they are learning and talking the game.

Extractions: By The Associated Press Robert Brooks finally decided his body could take no more. The wide receiver retired Monday after seven injury-plagued seasons with the Green Bay Packers during which he never became the superstar many thought he would. He said his knees, back and hamstrings could no longer withstand the punishment of pro football. ''You can fool a lot of people, but you can't fool yourself,'' he said. ''I'm 29 years old, and after a practice, I feel like I'm 50.'' Brooks, who originated the ''Lambeau Leap,'' the Packers' trademark jump into the Lambeau Field stands to celebrate a touchdown, retires as the Packers' career leader in postseason catches and receiving yards. He is the seventh-leading receiver in the club's 80-year history. ''I just couldn't cover it up any more,'' Brooks said. ''I found myself missing so many practices and taking so much medication just to practice. When you get to that point, I think it's time to call it quits.'' In 1995, Brooks caught 102 passes for a team-record 1,497 yards. But the next three seasons he had just 114 catches for 1,774 yards while missing 16 games with injuries. He had 31 receptions for 420 yards in 12 games last season while playing in what he called ''almost constant pain.''

He batted.375 as a junior and .362 in his senior year, when the Crimson recorded its most wins (27) since the previous century and advanced to the College World Series.
