College football remains extremely popular today among students, alumni, and other fans of the sport. The first game played between teams representing different colleges or universities was played on November 6, 1869 between Rutgers University and Princeton University, at College Field, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Rutgers won, by a score of 6 to 4. As the score would indicate, the game bore little resemblance to the game of today.

Football, The Forward Pass, and Fred Biletnikoff The Consummate Receiver he pastime of kicking around a ball pre-dates recorded history. Ancient savage tribes played a form of primitive football. About 2500 years ago, Corinthians, Spartans, and Athenians enjoyed a ball-kicking game which the Greeks named episkuros . The Romans competed in a similar game termed harpastum which they transported west when they invaded the British Isles in the First Century, B.C. The game known in the United States as football derives its existence from the English game of rugby. Football was played informally on college lawns in the middle decades of the 19th Century and an annual freshman-sophomore series of "scrimmages" began at Yale in 1840. It was not unitl November, 1869, however, that the first formal intercollegiate football game was played - at New Brunswick, N.J., the Rutgers side defeated Princeton 6 goals to 4. The first professional game was played in 1895 at Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The National Football League was founded in 1921 and merged in 1949 with the All-American Conference and in 1970 with the American Football League.

Extractions: Alpha Index Index by Sport Index of Women Career Statistics Other Resources Although he was an All-American end at Florida State in 1964, many professional scouts doubted that he would make it in the NFL because he lacked speed. But, like Raymond Berry, Biletnikoff parlayed hard work, precise pass routes, and great hands into a Hall of Fame career with the Oakland Raiders. Coach John Madden called him "one of the most dedicated athletes I have ever seen." A part-time player in 1965 and 1966, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Biletnikoff became a starter in 1967, when he caught 40 passes. He caught 42 or more in each of the next 9 seasons, with career highs of 61 in 1968 and 1971, when he led the NFL. In Super Bowl XI, Biletnikoff was named most valuable player after catching 4 passes for 79 yards, setting up 3 touchdowns, in Oakland's 32-14 win over the Minnesota Vikings. Biletnikoff retired after the 1978 season. He had 589 career receptions for 8,974 yards, a 15.2 average, and 76 touchdowns. The high-strung Biletnikoff suffered from an ulcer through most of his professional career and threw up before every game because of his nerves. His trademark was large gobs of a gooey substance known as "stickum" which he smeared on his socks so he could apply some to his fingers before each play.

Extractions: Discussions about Fred Biletnikoff inevitably start with the hands big, soft, supple and covered with the gooey substance he called "stickum." They were amazing hands, ball-attracting magnets that pulled in any pass within the time zone of his pattern. If Biletnikoff could touch a ball, he could catch it a fact he proved over and over during a 14-year AFL/NFL journey that started in Oakland and ended in the Hall of Fame. Biletnikoff wasn't fast and his narrow-shouldered, 190-pound frame should by all rights have disintegrated with the heavy pounding it absorbed from 1965 to '78, when Biletnikoff turned sideline and over-the-middle pass catching into an art form. He couldn't beat the faster defensive backs physically, but he could outwork and outthink them. Biletnikoff's precise, perfectly timed, sleight-of-foot patterns became legendary, as did his ability to make the difficult catch at the crucial point of a game. Nothing came easy for Biletnikoff, who studied reels of film before every game and spent hours catching practice passes. The work habits were born from chronic worry, which was responsible for the ulcer he developed during his college days at Florida State. He agonized, paced and threw up before every game, and it took hours for him to calm down afterward. He was enraged, absolutely mortified, by every dropped pass.
