Transactions OAKLAND RAIDERS RAP Season In Review The Raiders exhibited mettle, talent and maddening inconsistency during the 1999-2000 season. They began with a last-minute loss at Green Bay and finished with a stirring overtime victory at Kansas City. Playing a grueling schedule that included four games in 18 days, Oakland had an 8-8 record for the second straight year. In a season of unmatched parity and unpredictability in the NFL, the Raiders earned the unofficial monicker of "The Big Tease." They achieved upsets at Minnesota, Buffalo and Kansas City three of the league's most hostile playing environments. At home in mid-December, Oakland handed Tampa Bay a stunning 45-0 shellacking, ending the Buccaneers' six-game winning streak. The Bucs didn't lose again until the NFC Championship game. On the flip side, the Raiders surrendered the lead in the fourth quarter in five losses. Breakdowns on defense, offense and special teams turned potential victories into deflating defeats. They were swept by the hated Broncos (again), finished fourth in the AFC West and missed the playoffs for the sixth straight year. In the end, these Raiders should be remembered for providing their fans with hope, excitement and a mountain of ifa-coulda-shoulda-woulda-frustration. Here's a capsule analysis:

What a surprise, the Jeff George era begins with a loss! Congratulations to Elvis Grbac, Andre Rison, and THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS for yet another fantastic victory over Al Davis' Oakland Traiders. Monday Night Football 9/8/97 Chiefs 28 Traiders 27 It must have been fantastic to be Marcus Allen after the game, huh Al? Just fire blameless Joe Bugel and get it over with now. Congratulations to Bill Parcells, Neil O'Donnell, Adrian Murrell and THE NEW YORK JETS for exposing Al Davis' Oakland Traiders as the incompetent team that they are. Sunday 9/21/97 Jets 23 Traiders 22 The victory over the Atlanta Falcons probably shouldn't count as the Raiders almost allowed Billy Joe Tolliver, a quarterback who came out of retirement, to beat them. Larry Brown sure is coming in useful.

Texas Attorney General John Cornyn has withdrawn former Attorney General Dan Morales legal opinion of the 1996 Hopwood case, which barred ethnic and racial considerations from the schools financial aid policies. Cornyns announcement wont change current admission practices at the university until the outcome of a current appeal is decided. Dan Morales Only the United States Supreme Court can resolve these sensitive issues with any degree of certainty, said Cornyn in a two-page opinion. Absent clear guidance from the High Court, we think it inadvisable to reach broad conclusions on what may or may not be permitted under Hopwood on matters other than admissions.

Extractions: RIVER FALLS, Wis. A leader appears to have emerged in the Kansas City Chiefs' effort to identify a punter. Coach Dick Vermeil on Tuesday said former Iowa punter Jason Baker has established a slight edge over Leo Araguz, who spent three seasons as the punter for the Raiders before dropping out of football for a year. But the competition won't be decided until the Chiefs see the two men kick under game conditions, which begin Monday with the nationally televised Hall of Fame game with Green Bay. "It'll come down to who punts well under pressure," Vermeil said. "Right now it's like being on the driving range. We'll see who hits the ball well when we go play.
Extractions: RIVER FALLS, Wis. It's probably a good sign for any football team when the most hotly contested competition at training camp is for the punter's job. It's probably also a good sign when the team's kicker says he's comfortable with either candidate as his holder. Morten Andersen still doesn't know whether Leo Araguz or Jason Baker will be holding for him when the Chiefs open the season Sept. 7 against San Diego. For that matter, Andersen can't say with 100 percent certainty that he'll be Kansas City's kicker as long as former San Francisco kicker Jose Cortez remains on the training camp roster. But this much we know for certain about the Chiefs' kicking game: Andersen says he's fully recovered from the December arthroscopic knee surgery that knocked him out of the final two games of the 2002 season.
