This is the single most important thing you should get out of this FAQ: DO NOT BUY YOUR TELESCOPE FROM A DEPARTMENT STORE. Ignore everything any literature tells you about magnification and such. Buy from a telescope store, where you will get a telescope that makes smaller claims, but will give you FAR better performance. The reason is that as far as telescopes go, how much you can magnify is a function of the amount of light the telescope receives, which is almost entirely determined by the telescope's aperture (the size of the lens or mirror that points at the sky). As far as magnification goes, you can expect 50x per inch of aperture on a normal night.

There's just so much science in there that it's worth the risk. Opportunity has been investigating the rim of the crater since late May to find the best possible place to go in to avoid rolling over. The earliest chance to enter the crater will be next week, when it will drive to the southern edge of the crater and make a final check of the steepness of the slope. You get your chance and approach. You start talking and when asked what you do, before your brain kicks in, your mouth says, "theoretical physicist". You're doomed. You're a charlatan and you will be exposed in no time. But wait, there is hope. Before your next party, read Brian Greene's book on The Fabric of the Cosmos and though you won't be able to impress graduate students, you will certainly add life to a party's conversation.

TheSpaceWriter.com: Library And Gift Shop Welcome to the Helen Sawyer Hogg Memorial Reference Library and astronomy Gift Shop. dedicated to the appreciation of astronomers everywhere http://www.thespacewriter.com/library.html
Extractions: Helen Sawyer Hogg , was a Canadian astronomer who also popularized the science for generations of Canadians. Her main area of research was globular clusters. She taught at the University of Toronto, and was a member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) for more than 60 years. She spurred public interest in a variety of ways: through lectures, newspaper columns, and later in her life, radio and television appearances. Her most popular book was The Stars Belong to Everyone , published in 1976. My only contact with this remarkable woman was in the early 1990s, not long before she died. We talked by telephone and exchanged a letter or two while I was researching and writing about the Hubble Space Telescope's observation of the globular cluster M14. In 1938 Dr. Sawyer Hogg took a series of plates of the cluster that showed the presence of a nova that slowly brightened and faded over time. At the time I had no idea how popular and beloved this woman was, but found out after her death the depth and breadth of her contributions to astronomy and public interest in that most sublime of all sciences. Sputnik satellite that had been launched. From there, I found the sky in books — the old Time-Life series about the planets, for example. As the Space Age drew on and more pictures of the stars and planets made their way into popular media, I got hooked. When I started writing about space "stuff", books were the first place I turned. Self-education turned into a thirst for more knowledge, and in college I took as many astronomy and space science courses as I could fit into my schedule.
