Extractions: 'BY FAR THE BEST LIKENESS OF CARLYLE IN THE DAYS OF HIS STRENGTH' FORMERLY OWNED BY ONE OF THE GREATEST VICTORIAN PORTRAIT PAINTERS CARLYLE ( THOMAS, 1795-1881, essayist and historian ) FINE MEDALLION PORTRAIT OF CARLYLE BY THOMAS WOOLNER, FORMERLY OWNED BY SAMUEL LAURENCE, 'signed and dated' by the artist, plaster, J.A. Froude, Carlyle's biographer, considered this medallion portrait of Carlyle to be 'by far the best likeness of him in the days of his strength. His head was extremely long, with the chin thrust forward; the neck was thin; the mouth firmly closed, the underlip slightly projecting, the hair grizzled and thick and bushy. His eyes, which grew lighter with age, were then of a deep violet, with fire burning at the bottom of them, which flashed out at the least excitement.' Carlyle sat for a portrait by Samuel Laurence. Horace Pym recounts in Odds and Ends at Foxwold that the present medallion portrait was given by Thomas Woolner to Samuel Laurence who kept it for the rest of his life. It was at the Laurence sale that Pym purchased it. It was bought from Pym's collection in 1996. This medallion portrait is usually to be found in bronze casts; the definition is greater in plaster.

Extractions: WOOLNER (THOMAS, 1825-1892, sculptor and poet, member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brethren ) SERIES OF SEVEN AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED ('Thomas Woolner'), to Admiral Sir Anthony Hoskins and his wife, concerning arrangements with his friend the poet Coventry Patmore, his inability to join Hoskins in Greece, a frame for the Admiral's portrait ('...Glad the portrait is improved. - If you want help in framing, command me, as I should save you several pounds getting it for a professional price...'), print hanging, Sir Anthony's duties in making himself pleasant to 'Royalties' ('...such entertainings seem rather like having to take your hat off and make formal bows in the middle of a battle...'), H.M. Stanley's [ In Darkest Africa ] ('...one of the most entertaining books of heroic and victorious adventure ever written - I must say that Emin comes out in the end as rather a sneak, and the snubbing that Gordon used to bestow upon him seems to me well bestowed; for he is evidently destitute of the sense of gratitude...'), news of their respective families, the 'chummy' relationship between Germany and Britain which is likely to put of 'the expected European row' ('...it becomes a trifle difficult for either France or Russia to know what safe move to make without being subject [to] a rapid checkmate...'), invitations ('...I scarcely expected anything so grand as to dine with two Admirals and one popular Alexander...'), health ('...Sir Anthony...always comes upon one like a burst of bright weather...') and his successful activities as a farmer ('...all my hay has been stacked in perfect condition! To the farmer this is like a symphony played in true time...), 1

Woolner trained with the sculptor William Behnes, exhibiting work at thr Royal Academy from 1843. Woolner's classical inclinations were rather difficult to reconcile with Pre-Raphaelite Medievalism, but his belief in close observation of nature was consistent with their aims. Woolner's sculptures immediately after the foundation of the Brotherhood in 1848 display close attention to detail. He made his name with forceful portrait busts and medallions. Perhaps his most complex works are 'Civilisation' and 'Virgilia'. These demonstrate his attempt to express the tension between the static stone and the dynamic desires of the figures represented emerging into solidity from it. Woolner was also a poet of some reputation in his day. His early poem 'My Beautiful Lady' is a Pre-Raphaelite work, emphasising intense unresolved moments of feeling. His later narrative works, 'Pygmalion', 'Silenus' and 'Tiresius' renounce Pre-Raphaelitism in favour of an often eroticised classicism. Woolner was a close friend of Alfred Tennyson , providing him with the scenario for 'Enoch Arden'. His speculations about human anatomy also impressed
