Extractions: William Lindsay Windus, The Flight of Henry VI from Towton Watercolor, approximately 6 x 10.5 inches. Tate Gallery, London. Windus shows on the left Henry with his son Edward, his wife Margaret, and his retainer Exeter fleeing from the battlefield near Towton. In the foreground, dominating the composition, is one of the swains Henry has so envied in the soliloquy that begins this scene in Henry VI, Part 3 (Act II, Scene v). Before Margaret, Edward and Exeter enter, Henry muses on the simple life: Ah, what a life were this! how sweet! how lovely! To kings that fear their subjects' treachery? In the foreground of the painting is a hawthorn, but Windus substitutes a swineherd for the shepherd to represent the envied bucolic life. For the full soliloquy, see William Dyce's painting on the same subject. Home Page Artists Plays Bibliography ... Emory University , Atlanta, GA This page was last revised: August 03

Extractions: Booth led boldly with his big bass drum (Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?) The Saints smiled gravely and they said: "He's come." (Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?) Walking lepers followed, rank on rank, Lurching bravoes from the ditches dank, Drabs from the alleyways and drug fiends pale Minds still passion-ridden, soul-powers frail: Vermin-eaten saints with mouldy breath, Unwashed legions with the ways of Death (Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?) Every slum had sent its half-a-score The round world over. (Booth had groaned for more.) Every banner that the wide world flies Bloomed with glory and transcendent dyes. Big-voiced lasses made their banjos bang, Tranced, fanatical they shrieked and sang: "Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?" Hallelujah! It was queer to see Bull-necked convicts with that land make free.

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood Waterhouse; william Morris; william Shakespere Burton; John william Inchbold;Thomas Seddon; william lindsay windus; Henry Holiday; Henry Wallis. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/jamesh0317/pre-raphaelite.html
Extractions: window.name='waterhouse'; The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was formed in 1848 in London, England. It was a short lived movement, born from the contemporary spirit of revolution that was prevalent in Europe. The year 1848 saw the overthrow of most European dynasties, and the authoring of the Communist Manifesto by Marx and Engels. Although the events in England were not so dramatic, there was a strong public feeling for the need of governmental reforms, led by a group known as the Chartists. The Chartists organized an important meeting in London in April, 1848 to show the strong public support for legal and parliamentary reforms. While not successful at those tasks, the meeting attracted the interest of many English youth, including two young members of London's Royal Academy. The artistic movement that arose from this meeting lasted only about five years, but began changes that had a profound effect on British painting. The painting revolution in France is seen by many to have begun with French Impressionism about twenty years after the Pre-Raphaelites in England. However, France saw Neo-Classicism, led by Jaques-Louis David, form at about the time of the French Revolution (1789). It gave an artistic alternative of social responsibility to the frivolous paintings of royal privilege of the time. The situation in British art was different. Since the beginning of the century, there had been diverse styles influencing the arts. From realism in nature, to romance (J.W.Turner), to academic (John Constable), to spiritual/mythical (William Blake). There was concern within the British painting establishment about the direction of painting. Direction and standards were needed. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was initially composed of a secret group of seven men, either student painters in London's Royal Academy schools, or their friends. The cryptogram "PRB" appeared on their paintings. The Brotherhood provided a direction. It was a new form of realism, part spiritual, and part presenting a new sense of actuality.
