The media called him the Prince of Pop . Warhol made his way from a Pittsburgh working class family to an American legend. Andy was born in 1930 in Pittsburgh as the son of Slovak immigrants. His original name was Andrew Warhola. His father was as a construction worker and died in an accident when Andy was 13 years old. Andy showed an early talent in drawing and painting. After high school he studied commercial art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Warhol graduated in 1949 and went to New York where he worked as an illustrator for magazines like Vogue and Harpar's Bazaar and for commercial advertising. He soon became one of New York's most sought of and successful commercial illustrators. In 1952 Andy Warhol had his first one-man show exhibition at the Hugo Gallery in New York. Yousuf Karsh (1908 - 2002) was born in Armenia in 1908 and grew up under the horrors of the Armenian massacres. His photographer uncle, George Nakash, brought him to Canada in 1924. After an apprenticeship in Boston with the eminent portrait photographer John H. Garo, Karsh settled in Ottawa in 1932, where he began his professional career. As early as 1936 he was photographing visiting statesmen and dignitaries, among them President Franklin Roosevelt. Karsh's major photographic exhibitions have attracted enthusiastic audiences worldwide, and he is much in demand as an eloquent and engaging speaker. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Canada,- the National Portrait Gallery, London, and other leading museums. He is a recipient of the Canada Council Medal and is a Companion of the Order of Canada (akin to a knighthood). Karsh was awarded the Presidential Citation (U.S.A.) for meritorious service on behalf of the handicapped. He has been Visiting Professor of Fine Arts at Ohio University at Athens and Emerson College in Boston, and has received more than two dozen honorary degrees.

    Extractions: Soon after its introduction in the 1950s, the LP began to offer a medium for the marriage of the musical arts to the visual arts. The appeal of LPs over CDs continues today for certain collectors who find the larger visual canvas of the LP to be esthetically superior. Five decades of intermingling art with music has left a certain expectation that such a coupling is just in the natural order of things. So, perhaps the biggest challenge with the evolution of audio technologies like mp3 is not encryption or intellectual property protection, but in somehow attaching visual art to the sound file.     Extractions: BY GARY MORRIS The Whitney Museum and New York MOMA's restoration of Andy Warhol Paul Morrissey 's distinctly different and ultimately quite un-Warholesque films like Trash and Heat (no putdown of those classics intended). Warhol's disengagement with an art form whose course he radically altered is legendary; the image of a permanently distracted Andy turning on a camera, corralling some of his "superstars" to primp and prance in front of it, then wandering off on some new tangent seems irrefutable. And arguably some of the best of the early films that are only recently surfacing suggest another auteur at work: poet and campmeister Ronald Tavel. But it's Warhol's personality that dominates, just as it does his more obviously personal works like the silkscreens. A film like Inner and Outer Space (1965), with multiple Edie Sedgwicks, is clearly related to the multiple Elvises, or electric chairs, or soup cans. The obsession with surface, and the terror of what lies beneath it, that's rampant in his visual art is all over films like Hedy and Horse (both 1965) and, supremely, the hundreds of four-minute
