Marie Spartali Stillman MARIE SPARTALI STILLMAN (18441927). In 1844, in Middlesex, England, Marie Spartali was born. Her father was an import-export merchant http://www.wside.k12.il.us/phs/vam/Project/MSSTILLMAN.html
Extractions: In 1844, in Middlesex, England, Marie Spartali was born. Her father was an import-export merchant and was at times a Greek consul. From 1864 to 1870, she studied under Ford Madox Brown, alongside his two daughters. She was always involved with artists. She was a model for Rossetti, Burne-Jones, and photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, and was considered to be a very beautiful woman. In 1871, despite her families pleas not to, she married W.J. Stillman, an American journalist and amateur artist. They had three children together, but only two lived past infancy. In 1878, they moved to Florence due to her husbands work. Next, they moved to Rome until 1898. During this time, Marie contributed work to the Grosvenor Gallery as well as at the New Gallery. After her husbands death, in 1898, she returned to England to reside at Kensington until her death in 1927. Many works were created throughout her lifetime. Hardly any were sold, and few were remembered. She chose to paint floral pictures, landscapes, and portraits of women. Many of her paintings were taken from themes of Italian works, especially the writings of Dante and Boccacio. "Beatrice" "The Enchanted Garden of Messer Ansaldo" Artists Student Artists ... Sources

From 1864-70 she trained under Ford Madox Brown, alongside his daughters Catherine and Lucy. She was a noted 'stunner' (the Pre-Raphaelite slang for a good-looking woman) and sat for Rossetti and Burne-Jones as well as the photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. In 1871 she married against her family's wish the American journalist and amateur artist W.J. Stillman; they had three children, one of whom died in infancy. Owing to her husband's work as a newspaper correspondent the family settled in Florence in 1878, and then Rome until 1898. Despite prolonged residences abroad, Spartali became a regular contributor to Grosvenor Gallery from 1877 until 1887, and its sucessor - the New Gallery - as well as at various venues in eastern USA. Her sustained output proves her professionalism, but little of her work seems to have sold. Her favoured subjects were literary-historical figure groups and decorative female heads preferred by patrons; landsapes and flower pieces are equally representative though less distinctive. Many of her works draw on Italian literary themes, especially Dante and Boccacio as well as depicting Italian landscape.

Extractions: The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was created in 1848 by seven artists: Dante Gabriel Rossetti , William Michael Rossetti, William Holman Hunt James Collinson John Everett Millais Frederic George Stephens , and Thomas Woolner. Their goal was to develop a naturalistic style of art, throwing away the rules and conventions drilled into students' heads at the Academies. Raphael was the artist considered to have attained the highest degree of perfection, so much so that students were encouraged to draw from his examples rather than from nature itself; thus they became the "Pre-Raphaelites".

Extractions: Grave location: Birchington, Kent: All Saints' Churchyard Son of Gabriele Rossetti and Frances Polidori. He spoke fluently Italian as well as English and was educated at King's College School (1837-1842), F.S. Cary's Academy of Art (1842-1846) and the Royal Academy Antique School. In 1847 he left school to concentrate on art. He sent a fan letter to Ford Madox Brown, whom he admired much. Brown thought Rossetti was being sarcastic and went to the Rossetti family home to give him a sound trashing. There he found to his surprise that Rossetti was absolutely sincere. Brown became Rossetti's mentor and their friendship lasted for life. When he was only eighteen Rossetti wrote his poem "The Blessed Damozel", which stresses the importance of human love. In 1848 he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with William Holman Hunt, John Millais, James Collinson, Thomas Woolner, Frederic Stephen and his brother William Rossetti. They published "The Germ", a platform for their poetry and other art. In 1849 he first exhibited an important painting, "The Girlhood of Mary Virgin" (now at the Tate Gallery, London).
