    Extractions: A Stanley Spencer Chronology 1891 Born on June the 30th in Cookham, Berkshire on the banks of the Thames. He was the eighth surviving child of William Spencer, a piano teacher, and his wife Annie. He was educated at a school run by his sisters and was given his first painting lessons by the artist Dorothy Bailey. 1907 Entered Maidenhead Technical College where his training as an artist began. 1908 It is usually said that Spencer entered the Slade School of Art in this year. However Adrian Glew has discovered that the Slade's records list him as having entered in the year 1907-8. This means that he actually spent five years, not four studying there (1). At the Slade (part of University College London) his contemporaries included Nevinson, Gertler, Bomberg, Paul Nash and William Roberts. He seems to have been very happy there, despite being bullied by the other students who gave him the nickname "Cookham" from his devotion to his birthplace. 1912-15 He painted at home and in 1912 exhibited 'John Donne Arriving in Heaven' and some drawings at Roger Fry's Second Post-impressionist Exhibition at the Grafton Galleries, London.

    Extractions: From the 1880s to the 1930s, Walter Sickert was one of London's most influential artists. As instigator of the 'Fitzroy Street Group' he encouraged artists to 'seek beauty in everyday urban surroundings'. The Group formed an exhibiting society, the 'Camden Town Group'. They held exhibitions at the Carfax Gallery in central London between 1911 and 1912." - Museum of London Summer Afternoon , c.1908-9 (click image to enlarge) La Hollandaise perfectly represents the kind of painting most often associated with Sickert - a plump nude on a redimentary bedstead. Dramatic immediacy unites with gloomy dissolution. The frankness of the image within its friction of light and shadow is veiled, not from a sense of propriety but through Sickert's life-long adherence to understatement. From the momemt that such paintings as this and Le Lit de Cuivre found their mark among Sickert's contemporaries, their influence has been absorbed by successive generations of British arits, from Bacon and Freud to Auerbach, Hodgkin and Kossoff. . . The animal sensuality of the paintings is detectalbe in some of Francis Bacon's depictions of nudes, both male and female, on isolated beds and mattresses. . ."

    Extractions: at Cliveden, Buckinghamshire Stanley was the eighth surviving child of William Spencer, a music teacher, and his wife, Anne. He was born in a semi-detached Victorian house halfway along the High Street in Cookham , on the that day a crow fell down its chimney and flapped about the living room until released. The family thought it a good omen and named him after Stanley Spencer, a prominent balloonist of the era. He obtained his educated at a school run by his sisters before entering Maidenhead Technical College where his artistic training began. His first been art lessons were from Dorothy Bailey. At seventeen, Stanley entered the Slade School of Fine Art at University College, London and, there, he won the Composition Prize for ‘The Nativity’ (1912). Stanley joined the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) at the outbreak of the First World War. He worked, for a while, at the Beaufort Hospital in Bristol before being sent, in August 1916, to Salonika - a Macedonian port defended by the British & the French under General Sarrail - as part of the 68th Field Ambulancemen. He transferred to an infantry unit in August 1917. In May the following year, Stanley was asked to contribute artistically to the government planned Hall of Remembrance. He was to "to paint a picture under such title as ‘A Religious Service at the Front,’ or any subjects in or about Salonika". However, work on Stanley’s most famous war painting, ‘Travoys arriving with Wounded at a Dressing Station at Smol, Macedonia (September 1916),’ did not begin until after the Armistice.
