Inició su aprendizaje artístico en el taller de Gleyre, relacionándose con Monet y Renoir e interesándose por las obras de Corot . Sisley sintió siempre especial atracción hacia los paisajes, trabajando en esos años juveniles en las cercanías de París. Miembro de una rica familia inglesa, pintaba por afición ya que su padre se ocupaba de sus gastos. La ruina de la familia llegó en 1870 con la Guerra Franco-Prusiana, trasladándose Alfred a Londres con Monet y Pissarro , vendiendo sus primeros lienzos al marchante Durand-Ruel. A su regreso a Francia se interesó por los paisajes parisinos, tratando de reproducir las diferentes luces de los momentos del día. La representación de los cielos, el agua y sus reflejos será su mayor logro, siendo las horas posteriores a las tormentas sus favoritas. Buena parte de su vida la pasó en la miseria, llegando a enviar obras al Salón de París de 1879 esperanzado en obtener un triunfo que le sacara de la pobreza, triunfo que no llegó. Los fracasos le obligaron a refugiarse en la localidad de Moret-sur-Loing, donde falleció. Paradójicamente, el público se interesó por sus trabajos tras su muerte, alcanzando un extraordinario éxito de ventas.

Among his works are The Square at Argenteuil (1872) and The Canal (1872) (both in the Louvre, Paris). His father was a wealthy English businessman in Paris. Sisley was sent to England at the age of 18, destined for a commercial career, but he was afterwards allowed to study art, and worked in the studio of Charles Gleyre, where he met Monet and Renoir. He devoted himself exclusively to landscape, exhibited at the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874, and is a close partner of Monet in atmospheric colour. Unlike most other Impressionists, Sisley developed his style slowly and surely, without obvious changes. He began virtually as a Sunday painter , but the loss of the family fortune compelled him to paint in earnest for a living.

Born in Paris of English parents, his family initially gave him much support as an artist, sending him to Gleyre's studio, where he met Renoir, Monet and Bazille. He was soon to spend time painting in Fontainebleau, at Chailly with Monet, Bazille and Renoir, and later at Marlotte with Renoir. His style at this time was deeply influenced by Courbet and Daubigny, and when he first exhibited at the Salon in 1867 it was as the pupil of Corot. Soon he became deeply influenced by the Impressionism principals and his painting began to reflect the experimentation with light that characterizes this artistic movement. He now saw himself as a full-time professional painter and part of the Impressionist group, exhibiting with them in 1874, 1876, 1877 and 1882. His work had by this time achieved complete independence from the early influences that had affected him. During the Franco-Prussian war, his father had lost all his money, reducing him to a state of near poverty, in which he was to stay until virtually the end of his life. Sadly, he neither saw financial rewards nor public acclaim. The Franco-Prussian war depleted his family’s finances, reducing him to a state of near poverty from which he would never recover. And his inability to promote himself as well as many of his Impressionist contemporaries did, meant that Sisley received little of the recognition he deserved from the art and collector world of that time.

It contrasts sharply in treatment and character with his Molesey Weir where everything is boldly defined, and as well as the particular subtlety of color the subject demanded shows a delicacy of brushstroke appropriate to the suggestion of objects taking dim shape through a veil of atmosphere. The faint warmth that is already saturating the vaporous blue and beginning to tint the foreground flowers is beautifully conveyed. The varied informality of brushstroke corresponds to the method of which Sisley expressed his approbation in one of his few observations on painting. He considered that even in a single picture there should be this variety of treatment, adapted to the demands of one passage or another of the work. It is one of the reasons for the vitality of Impressionist painting. If few comparisons offer with the work of other Impressionist masters there is one striking parallel in Monet 's Impression of the 1874 exhibition, where his freely and swiftly manipulated brush causes the harbor of Le Havre to take shape in the fog. Since the end of the Franco-German war he had worked in several of the environs of Paris-at Louveciennes, Bougival, Argenteuil and Voisins but mainly at Marly. The collapse of the family business in the war had transformed the well-to-do young man under no urgent necessity to sell his pictures into a professional faced with as hard a struggle as Monet and Pissarro and braving it, fortunately, for a long time without detriment to his art. In these years he developed in freedom of style on somewhat similar lines to Monet but a particular grace and lyrical feeling were personal to Sisley. There is a hint of Corot in his sensitive treatment of the building shown, very French-if not especially Impressionist-in the pink and blue of its façade. The Impressionist habit of accepting as subject whatever they found in front of them often quite fortuitously produced an interest of composition as appears here in the perspective of poles and trees. Sisley's modest and retiring disposition may sometimes be traced in the undemonstrative nature of his art which is none the less of intrinsic value. In its quiet fashion this is one of the Impressionist masterpieces.
