Like his friend William Morris, he married the beautiful model for many of his paintingsin his case, Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal, who died of an overdose of laudanum in 1862 and was the posthumous model (from memory, that is) for Rossetti's painting of Beatrice, the beloved of Dante. In a romantic gesture, Rossetti threw the manuscript of his poems into the grave when his wife was burried, but later repented and had his friends dig it up again. Extractions: O nce upon a time, in 1849, two young students at the esteemed Royal Academy in London shared a studio. These two men were William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais . They became inspired by the words of John Ruskin ['go to nature in all singleness of heart'], and the poetry of John Keats (Hunts first picture for the Royal academy exhibition being painting on the theme from Keats poem The Eve of St. Agnes ). Another young artist, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (who had dropped out of the Royal Academy school) admired Hunt's picture at the exhibition and soon became a great friend of Hunt. Hunt and Rossetti drew up a list of personalities whom they deemed their ' immortals ' [William Shakespeare and such. . .] and affixed it to their studio wall. Searching for a purer form of art, [that was free from corruption pride and disease' -Hunt] they decided to return to the artistic traditions that came before Raphael and the Post Renaissance (hence the name Pre-Raphaelite). They saw the academic art that flourished in the Academy as "sloshy" [this refers to artists paying no attention to nature, and painting merely with the rules and techniques learned in the academies. The perfect example of this was the common scene of a nude on a beach. Why is she there? What is the context and story of this painting?] and nicknamed the founder of the academy "Sir Sloshua Reynolds". And so, in their enthusiasm to reform British art and they knew it [they would also exhibit their pictures with the initials P.R.B], the three men formed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and recruited four more members. Extractions: The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded in 1848 by a group of English painters: Dante Gabriel Rossetti John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt , as well as poets and critics: William Michael Rossetti, an art critic and Dante's younger brother; the art critic Frederic George Stephens; the painter James Collinson; and the sculptor and poet Thomas Woolner . Millais left the group in 1859, but as the second generation Pre-Raphaelites, other English artists joined it, including the painter Edward Coley Burne-Jones ; the poet and artist William Morris was never a Pre-Raphaelite in the true conception of the term. The group reacted against the Victorian materialism and the conventions of the Royal Academy in London and was inspired by medieval and early Renaissance painters up to and including the Italian painter Raphael. They found their inspiration at first from the bible, history and poems, but soon the subjects from modern life were also used rooted in realism and truth to nature. Pre-Raphaelite art became distinctive for its blend of archaic, romantic, and moralistic qualities.

Lizzie's tragic life was cut short by an overdose of laudanum. Was it accident or suicide? Why is Bethany so obsessed with her and at the same time so determined to put herself beyond the reach of her loer, Adam? Extractions: The verses were written for the etching of Viola and Olivia by Walter Deverell, one of the few visual works executed by Deverell as part of the P.R.B. In his introduction to the 1901 facsimile of The Germ, William Michael Rossetti says: "The verses are not of much significance. The etching by Deverell, however defective in technique, claims more attention, as the Viola was drawn from Miss Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal, whom Deverell had observed in a bonnet-shop some few months before the etching was done, and who in 1860 became the wife of Dante Rossetti. This face does not give much idea of hers, and yet it is not unlike her in a way. The face of Olivia bears some resemblance to Christina Rossetti: I think however that it was drawn, not from her, but from a sister of the artist."

Extractions: KDroisen@hotmail.com Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) and Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) Christina Rossetti and Dante Gabriel Rossetti were born in London. Their father, Gabriele Rossetti, an exiled Italian patriot, was a scholar and poet and was obsessed with the work of the great Italian poet, Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), author of The Divine Comedy . The Rossetti family members were all devoted students of art and literature, including English authors, Italian authors, and English and continental painters. The Rossetti's childhood education was spotty: none read classical literature or studied contemporary European painting, although Gabriel Rossetti eventually attended King's College, and the Royal Academy in London. Sing-Song: A Nursery Rhyme Book Since Christina Rossetti never married, critics have tended to read her work autobiographically, identifying her dedication to study and contemplation as a source of sexual frustration that finds expression in her poetry as a fear of bodily pleasure. (Needless to say, the work of unmarried male authors is almost never read this way.) This reductive view is reinforced by her poetry's interest in exploring the conventional distinction between earthly (carnal) love and spiritual love. Until the early 1980's, in fact, literary critics tended to treat her work as an interesting oddity of Victorian poetry. The evolution of feminist and New Historicist criticism helped reclaim her work from obscurity and it is now treated with more respect by Victorian scholars.
