Born in Florence, Italy, Sargent was the son of moderately well-to-do American expatriates. Constantly traveling and with enthusiastic parental encouragement, Sargent and his sisters imbibed the art, music, and culture of Europe. After brief study at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence, Sargent moved in 1874 to Paris, the international art center. He studied with the fashionable portraitist Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran and, after strenuous examinations, gained entrance to the prestigious Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Early artistic achievements assured the precocious Sargent of a promising career within the Parisian art scene: the Salon of 1877 accepted his Frances Sherburne Ridley Watts, and the 1878 Salon accepted The Oyster Gatherers of Cancale; in 1879, his portrait of Carolus-Duran received honorable mention. Other critically acclaimed works included El Jaleo and The Daughters of Edward D. Boit.

The derision aroused by his portrait of Madame Gautreau when exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1884 interrupted what might have been a close connection with French art and led him to make London his headquarters as a portrait painter. But he contributed to the establishment of an insular offshoot of Impressionism in the New English Art Club, of which he was one of the founder members in 1886, and sought to arouse interest in Monet 's work for America. He had the greatest admiration for Monet and was influenced in his own style by the French master. At the time he painted this portrait he had recently bought one of Monet's paintings, Rock at Tréport The portrait was painted in the spring of 1888 at Giverny where Monet had gone to live not long before. The wife of his former patron, Mme Ernest Hoschedé, whom Monet had befriended and who was to become his second wife, appears at the right of the picture. Sargent had not attempted the translation of light and shade into terms of pure color in the essentially Impressionist fashion but indicates the splashes of sunlight through the trees with his own vivacity, and his capacity for the brilliant sketch is well exemplified in the figures. © 16 Jul 2002

    Extractions: Biography John Singer Sargent American Painter John Singer Sargent was an American painter by birth-right. He loved his country yet he spent most of his life in Europe. He was the most celebrated portraitist of his time but left it at the very height of his fame to devote full time to landscape painting, water colors and public art. He was born in Florence, to American parents and traveled extensively throughout Europe. His parents never settled back in America, not stepping foot in the States himself until right before his 21st birthday to retain his citizenship. He was schooled as a French artist, heavily influenced by the Impressionist movement, the Spanish Master Velazquez, the Dutch Master Frans Hals, and his teacher Carolus-Duran . He was the darling of Paris until the scandal of his Madame X painting at the 1884 Salon. Discouraged at the rejection, even considered leaving art at the age of 28, he left Paris and settled (if that word could ever be used for him) in England where he reached the height of his fame. Her mother was the descendant of the 16th Century pirate, Barbarossa Her parents were poor, yet have gaiety in their lives. Rosina had a sister who was beautiful as she, yet was doomed to live an obscure life. During the 1870's, Rosina was the subject for various artists who visited the Island of Capri. English artist Frank Hyde, first used Rosina as a model for his Capri paintings. Rosina was a very handsome girl with frizzled hair and nut-brown complexion of an Arab. He painted her in various poses in various surroundings. She was a very sweet and compliant model. He was captivated by the breathtaking surroundings and the unusual beauty of its predominantly dark skinned inhabitants of the island. he set up a studio in the abandoned monastery of Santa Teresa. He worked there for many years. It would be a few years until John Singer Sargent came to the island and swept his main model away. John Singer Sargent was in search of a new subject to paint. Before his arrival, he was acclaimed for his painting, the Oyster Gatherers of Cancale. He wanted to visit faraway places such as Japan, but his Parisian career took off so quickly that he couldn't make the Japan trip, so he settled for Naples and Capri.
